BA Theatre Arts (Solo Performance), by contrast, will appeal to you if you have a strong interest in performance traditions outside the mainstream, with the performer as a key originator, rather than interpreter, of the material performed.

BA Theatre Arts (Theatre Directing) puts the focus on the practices and aesthetics of theatre directing with an emphasis on the director as collaborator with performer and designer.

Theatre Arts (Design and Technical Theatre) enables you to develop approaches to scenographic, visual, aural and technical design for theatre.

Course Content

What will you study?

Throughout your three years on this course you will explore a diverse range of modules based on the study of theatre as a dynamic contemporary form. The principal area of study is the period from the late nineteenth century to the present day and you will study areas including ensemble practice, performance art, solo performance and installation, increasingly focusing on areas of contemporary theatre and performance that question and interrogate established forms of theatre.

This course encourages the development of your creative, critical and imaginative abilities, and you are encouraged to translate your ideas and experience into practice, both through seminar work and substantial practical work. The predominant teaching methods are student-centred seminars and workshop exploration as well as formal lectures. You will be involved in various theatre productions and learn performance skills in voice, movement, improvisation, and technical theatre to facilitate your practical work.

All students will follow the same course in the first year, developing your understanding of theatre arts and the skills that support it. In your second and third year you can choose modules that develop specific 'pathways' in group performance, solo performance, directing or technical theatre, defining yourself and allowing you to focus on your particular area of interest.
