History and Philosophy of Art

For over 20 years, Kent has delivered and developed highly innovative and interdisciplinary teaching approaches in the visual arts. We have established distinctive research strengths in aesthetics, contemporary art, photographic studies, the philosophy of art, art history and in developing teaching approaches to the subject. These interests are reflected in the variety and range of modules which we offer our students throughout their time at Kent. The high quality of our teaching has led to History & Philosophy of Art staff receiving several University teaching awards as well as nominations for excellence in practice in the students’ union annual awards for excellence in teaching.

Alongside traditional academic modules, our students gain opportunities for practice-based learning and engagement with the visual arts, for example, by taking photographs, writing criticism, curating exhibitions, or by collecting art, on behalf of the department, for our growing and highly distinctive Print Collection. All of these modules provide both a high level of academic engagement with the subject and provide some of the key aptitudes required for future employment in a competitive job market.

Following an award from the Higher Education Academy (HEA), we are running a pilot programme providing direct support for our students with their personal statements and testimonials for their future careers. We also offer a year in industry option.

In the National Student Survey 2013, 93% of arts students were satisfied with the quality of their course. And, History of Art is ranked 8th in the UK in the 2015 Guardian University Guide.

Year in industry

The School of Arts ‘Year in Industry' module is an opportunity for students to take ‘a year out’ to gain experience of the workplace. We have long recognised the benefits of students taking a year out in the workplace, where the relevance of the subjects taken is as important as the experience itself, and the benefits to the student of increasing awareness and confidence are emphasised. It also gives students an opportunity to increase their contacts and network to let them hit the ground running when they graduate. The year itself will be pass/fail and is assessed through employer feedback and a submitted report from you that is marked. The year will offer reduced fees, is flexible in its approach and need not be specifically aligned to your subject of study.

• Access to HE Diploma: The University of Kent will not necessarily make conditional offers to all access candidates but will continue to assess them on an individual basis. If an offer is made candidates will be required to obtain/pass the overall Access to Higher Education Diploma and may also be required to obtain a proportion of the total level 3 credits and/or credits in particular subjects at merit grade or above.
