Description

Taking French and History and Philosophy of Art in combination enables you to learn the language and cultural presence of France and engage with a detailed interdisciplinary study of the visual arts.

French is one of the most beautiful romance languages. Outside of France it is spoken as far afield as Canada, the Seychelles, Madagascar and Mali. It is one of the official languages of the United Nations, and an important language in the EU. The University of Kent is an ideal location to study French. Canterbury is the closest British university city to mainland Europe, and our proximity to the Channel ports and Ashford International station means you can be in Paris in just a couple of hours. There are also many French-speaking students on campus, so you have a better chance to immerse yourself in the language than at any other university in the country.

Studying the History and Philosophy of Art (HPA) enables you to gain a rich understanding of the visual arts through the complementary perspectives of its history and the philosophical understanding of its nature and importance. A distinctive feature of HPA is the interaction between history and aesthetics in the curriculum, and the wide range of opportunities to study practical modules in everything from photography, through curating exhibitions to writing about art for the media and arts industries. This joint honours programme also allows you to focus your studies, if you wish to do so, by choosing options which most relate to French Art and other aspects of French culture.

During your year abroad, as part of an Erasmus programme, you could begin to study for a French qualification (Licence), or alternatively you can gain work experience by becoming a language assistant in a French school or by following other career paths. Past students in this programme have for example chosen to spend their Year Abroad working in art galleries in Paris. With the option of a dissertation in the final year, you could combine your love of both subjects to write about French art that you may have discovered on your year abroad.

This degree programme therefore is ideal for those wanting to gain a broad and detailed understanding of our world, one that is international in scope and that spans across the years.
