Description

This degree offers students the opportunity to undertake a degree focused on musical study within a variety of sub disciplines.

The degree comprises a set of units through which students study creative music making (both performance and composition), musicology (music history, ethnomusicology and social perspectives on music) and all aspects of musical craft (aural training, arranging, harmony). Students from a variety of backgrounds are encouraged to apply, and performance activities may encompass solo performance, jazz groups, choral performances, chamber music, world music, early music and contemporary ensembles.

Career Opportunities

Students who successfully complete the degree may begin work as qualified professionals in composition, arranging or performance or continue on to a specialised honours degree or on to various courses in education to pursue careers as either private teachers or school teachers.

Course Content

Course Aims

This course aims to provide students with high-level academic, theoretical and practical skills in music-making and scholarship.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge of the Western musical canon from historical, theoretical and practical perspectives;
  • demonstrate proficiency on a principal instrument;
  • show a critical awareness of the richness and complexity of non-Western music traditions, and will have studied Japanese, Middle Eastern, Indonesian or Indian music for a full trimester; and
  • analyse and explain formal characteristics of pieces in the Western elite and popular music traditions, and will have proficiency in arranging and orchestrating for standard ensembles forces.

    This course provides an extensive overview of Western and non-Western musics including theoretical and historical perspectives.

    Graduates will be able to communicate effectively in written forms and orally about music, using appropriate technical terminology.

    Graduates will practise problem solving skills through essay-writing and research tasks, and in addition to this, through assessment tasks relating to music notation.

    Graduates will gain a sense of social responsibility through studying the music and musical practices of a wide range of sociocultural groups and historical periods.

    Team Work

    Graduates will gain experience in collaborative academic tasks and practical experience in musical ensembles.

    Requirements

    A candidate shall be qualified for admission (see Admission Rule Undergraduate Policy).

    All students must complete a compulsory audition to enter the course. Assumed knowledge is any two units of English, AMEB performance standard of Grade 6.
