Description

Mason Gross School of the Arts (MGSA) offers two distinct programs of study in music. Students can pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree (B.A.) in music through the School of Arts and Sciences. This is a generalist liberal arts major. A Bachelor of Music degree (B.Mus.) is more specialized and is oriented towards professional careers in performance, jazz, or music education.

Both degree programs provide a thorough study of music theory and music history. While some performance is also included in the B.A. program, the B.Mus. program offers much more intensive training in this area and students must audition as part of the admissions process for MGSA.

Specializations include classical performance in voice, keyboard, guitar and orchestral instruments, conducting, theory, composition, musicology, jazz studies, and music education. We also have two certificate programs in recording arts for music technology and a Music Program in American Language Studies.
All music degree programs aim to develop well-educated professional musicians who have a deep historical and theoretical understanding of all aspects of music. The diversity of faculty specializations provides a breadth of expertise rarely encountered in other programs.

  • Loans must be repaid (usually after graduation) and can come from private lenders as well as federal, state and university sources.
  • Work-study allows students to earn money for college expenses while gaining valuable skills - often in their intended field.

  • More than 175 Rutgers research centers support pioneering work in stem cells, climate change, DNA analysis, and more.
