Sociology and Criminology

This joint degree course critically engages with some of the most challenging issues of our time. You will learn to challenge pre-conceptions and develop strong analytical abilities in order to view the world with a perceptive and critical eye and will gain detailed knowledge of sociological and criminological theories and research methods.

While you build transferable academic abilities, your employability should be developed through work placement schemes and specific vocational subjects.

Course Content

Sociology and Criminology combines two exciting and complementary disciplines.

In Sociology you will explore a range of key contemporary social issues such as: globalisation and development, modernity and postmodernity, inequality and social exclusion, media and culture, the family and gender relations, the city and urbanisation and crime and deviance.

In Criminology you will learn about the causes of crime and the ways in which societies respond to it through policing and the criminal justice system. You will study a wide variety of social phenomena associated with crime and deviance, developing a practical and theoretical understanding of the nature of crime, its causes, its control and associated forms of punishment in contemporary society.

Essential entry requirements

• 5 GCSEs at grade A*–C including English Language and Mathematics, or specified equivalents.

Typical offers

• A-Levels: BCC.
• BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma: DMM.

The Access Diploma to include 30 level 3 credits at Merit. Access applicants can meet the GCSE requirements through their current studies and do not need to have these qualifications separately.

• International Baccalaureate Diploma: 28 points.

Funding

Merit Scholarship scheme: £1,000, in year one only and based on academic performance.

• Available to all international students applying for full-time undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at Coventry University.
• Scholarships are allocated on the basis of academic merit. (Postgraduate applicants must hold 2.1 or equivalent, undergraduate applicants must hold A-levels or equivalent at grades BBC)
• There is no separate scholarship application process: all undergraduate applications from self-funded international students from any non-EU country and postgraduate applications from international, will automatically be considered for a merit award. You will not have to do anything, if you are successful you will be notified in due course by the International Office.

Occasionally, funding becomes available to enable the University, either centrally, through one of the faculties or from other sources, to offer research studentships in specified topics or fields of study.
