Course Content

EEX 3012 – Introduction to Exceptional Education.Credits: 3; Overview of special education characteristics and definitions of disabilities, the referral process and service delivery models. Information on the history of, legal basis for and contemporary issues in special education.

ENC 3254 – Speaking and Writing in the Discipline.Credits: 3; A communication course adjusted to a specific professional discipline, the discipline to be determined by need. Covers major elements of organizational communication with emphasis on composition of reports, proposals, letters and memos, manuals and oral presentations. Course materials and assignments are relevant to the specific discipline. (C) (WR)

PHC 4101 – Public Health Concepts.Credits: 3; Prereq: APK 2105C, and BSC 2007 or BSC 2009 or BSC 2010, and PSY 2012 and STA 2023; health science majors/minors only and department permission. Introduction to the basic tenets, applications and foci of public health, including integrating public health with other health professions.

*SPA 3011 – Speech Acoustics. Credits: 3; Pre/coreq: LIN2210. An introduction to scientific methodologies, physics of sound and elementary instrumentation related to human speech communication.

*SPA 3032 – Fundamentals of Hearing. Credits: 3; Concepts and principles relevant to the normal hearing processes: acoustics, gross anatomy, psychophysical methods and basic subjective correlates of the auditory system.

*SPA 3101 – Speech Anatomy & Physiology. Credits: 3; An introduction to elementary anatomy, physiology, and neurophysiology of the speaking mechanism.

*SPA 4004 – Language Development. Credits: 3. Study of stages and processes of language acquisition across the lifespan. Implications of abnormal and/or delayed development on assessment, diagnosis, and treatment are integrated into the lectures and discussions.

*SPA 4104 – Neural Basis of Communication. Credits: 3; To provide students with a basic understanding of the structures and functions of the human nervous system and the neurological processes involved in communication and related functions and their disorders.

*SPA 4250 – Introduction to Speech Disorders. Credits: 3; Pre/coreq: LIN2210 & SPA3101. This course addresses the following speech based disorders of communication: phonology motor speech;
resonatory; voice and stuttering.

*SPA 4302 – Audiometry and Hearing Disorders. Credits: 3; Prereq: SPA3032. Basic techniques in pure-tone and speech audiometry, measurements of middle-ear function and test interpretation. The course includes limited supervised clinical/laboratory experience in hearing testing.

SPA 4321 – Audiologic Rehabilitation. Credits: 3; Methods in auditory training and speechreading with hearing-impaired individuals and overview of aural rehabilitation.

*SPA 4400 – Language Disorders. Credits: 3; Pre/coreq: SPA4004. This lifespan course addresses the various language-based disorders of communication including language delays and disorders in infants, toddlers, and preschoolers, language-based learning disabilities (including co-morbidity with ADHD) and reading disorders in school-aged children and youth, and aphasias and dementias in adults.

*SPA 4904 – Special Topics Phonetics. Credits: 3; In this course students learn to describe the various sounds of American English, and then how to transcribe speech using the International Phonetic Alphabet.

Requirements

General Requirements An Associate of Arts (AA) degree or the approved equivalent (60+ semester hours of equivalent, transferable credit). Applicants who have completed at least 60 semester hours of undergraduate coursework but have not earned an AA degree from a Florida public community/state college or university may be required to complete additional coursework prior to admission. A cumulative GPA of 2.7 is the minimum required for admission to the program at the upper division level. This helps to assure that our graduates will have an upper division GPA of at least 3.0 (the minimum requirement for most graduate programs in the field). Completion of all UF General Education requirements except Diversity* Completion of all UF Writing and Math requirements* Completion of two sequential courses of foreign language in secondary (high) school or 8-10 sequential semester hours at the postsecondary level, or document an equivalent level of proficiency. Completion of all Prerequisite Course Requirements below with grades of C or higher. *This requirement is automatically met with an AA degree from a Florida SUS institution. Note: Students who are currently enrolled in a UF, campus-based major are generally not eligible for the Online BHS-CMS Program unless their personal circumstances require them to move away from Gainesville or to work full time.

  • Grants. Considered gift aid — no repayment required — and awarded to students showing the greatest financial need.
  • Scholarships. Considered gift aid, as they do not have to be repaid and do not require recipients to perform services.
  • Student Employment. Considered self-help aid, as students are offered aid in exchange for a service. The Student Employment Office assists enrolled students seeking part-time employment through various job programs.
  • Loans. Considered self-help aid as loans are a form of aid that must be repaid. UF primarily offers student loans through the Federal Direct Loan Program, but there are a number of other loan programs available at UF.
