Description

Imagine the satisfaction of helping someone reach their potential. Occupational Therapists work with a wide variety of people to help them take control of their lives and gain as much independence as they can. For people with physical or mental health limitations, everyday tasks may be difficult. But through activity, occupational therapy helps these people achieve what is important for them.

At Glasgow Caledonian, you will learn how to enable people to live more productive and enjoyable lives. This means assessing ways in which people spend their time, from personal care (getting dressed, washing, shopping), to being productive (paid or unpaid work, housework or education) and use of leisure time (sports, hobbies and social life). As a student you will learn how to help people adjust and cope after they have experienced activity limitation due to illness, injury or environmental restrictions.

You will develop skills in activity analysis, assessing ways in which people spend their time in meaningful activity to achieve a sense of wellbeing. As part of your studies, you will undertake practice education working with people of all ages with mental, physical and social conditions to improve their everyday function and prevent disability. Your work can range from adapting housing, so people can be self-sufficient, to teaching those with health conditions different coping strategies and helping children with learning disabilities participate in social activities. You will learn the core elements of occupational performance, learn to identify client need, develop intervention strategies to enable clients and learn about undertaking research.

Occupational Therapists work as part of a team and almost a third of this programme is dedicated to inter-professional study, where students from a range of health and social care professions learn together.
