Description

In choosing to study therapeutic radiography you are choosing a career as a therapeutic radiographer, one of the two radiography professions. Therapeutic radiographers are highly skilled professionals who work as part of a large healthcare team and have an essential role in both the planning and delivery of treatment of patients with cancer using radiotherapy.

Therapeutic radiography is a dynamic and ever-changing profession. You will combine caring with working with millions of pounds worth of the latest technology. As technology and patient care evolves, radiographers must be able to adapt to new and sometimes challenging demands.

During the course of their study, students develop team-working skills, the ability to multitask and use their initiative whilst thinking on their feet in the dynamic and fast-paced delivery of radiotherapy treatment. They also develop high levels of communication skills to enable them to provide care and support to patients and families throughout the cancer journey, from first treatment to follow-up.

We place a strong emphasis on developing professional values and clinical knowledge, as well as enhancing the communication and team-building skills of our students throughout the programme, which is the largest of its kind in Scotland. To do this we use a range of teaching methods including utilising modern radiotherapy technology in our state-of-the-art radiotherapy treatment planning suite, which provides our students with the opportunity to integrate their theoretical knowledge with practical skills in a simulated environment. In addition, our students have access to the X-ray suite, PACS image library and simulated clinical labs which provide a “virtual” hospital environment where students can practise under the supervision of tutors.

In recognition of the increasing importance to radiotherapy practice for diagnosis, treatment planning and staging of disease, imaging is taught throughout the programme, the teaching of which is augmented with the utilisation of high-spec digital image viewing computers and monitors which simulate clinical workstations and are used to review images and consolidate anatomy and pathology knowledge.

The Radiotherapy and Oncology teaching team are particularly proud of their accessibility and personal contact with students. The team work in close collaboration with their practice colleagues in the NHS and with their professional body to ensure that the programme is relevant to today’s workplace. The Health and Care Professions Council and The Society & College of Radiographers have approved this programme.

Completion of an Honours degree in Radiotherapy and Oncology leads to eligibility to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council, membership of the Society of Radiographers and eligibility to work in the NHS and private sectors.

Course Content

The degree runs over four years combining academic and practice-based learning. Academic studies are a mixture of lectures, tutorials, practical sessions and online modules, and include professional modules where you will learn about imaging techniques used both for diagnosis and treatment planning and verification, related anatomy, radiotherapy and oncology studies, and professional practice.

Our programme has an interdisciplinary element throughout all four years, which gives our students the opportunity to explore health and social care environments from a number of different professional standpoints. This also encourages them to develop attitudes and skills to enable them to work effectively in collaboration with other professional groups.

In our programme we use a wide range of both summative and formative assessment methods. This includes written and electronic exams, essays, case studies, critical review and presentations.

We also use self and peer assessment in addition to tutor marked assessments. In clinical practice, students have professional performance assessments and staged assessments in addition to OSCE. Students self-assess and are summatively assessed by practice educators.
