Course Content

Programme

  • 1st year

The first year contains courses about the the so-called foundation courses:

    • biological psychology,
    • developmental psychology,
    • personality psychology
    • social psychology
    • statistics

The teaching of skills takes place in small groups under the guidance of a teacher/mentor and focuses on:

    • acquiring basic academic skills (reading, presenting, writing, study skills)
    • applying statistical knowledge and research methods
    • learning professional methods of interviewing
  • 2nd year

The classes are subdivided in the spheres of action of a psychologist:

    • industrial and organizational psychology
    • brain and behaviour
    • clinical psychology
    • social psychology and its applications

Statistics, test theory, and research methodology are taught and in a practical form. You will be taught in small groups how to set up, describe and present a simple research project. Administering tests and the handling of diagnostics are highlighted during the practicals on professional skills.

  • 3rd year

You can focus on one of the specializations mentioned earlier, but there are also many other courses within the field of psychology or from a different context, even at foreign universities. Important in this year is the bachelor thesis: an academic report about your own research project supervised by a staff member. During the writing of the thesis you can combine the knowledge that you have gained during your studies with statistical, diagnostic and methodological skills.

Specialisations / Tracks

  • Honours College (honours program)

The Honours College gives talented, motivated students the opportunity to challenge themselves even more

by offering a programme that is followed in addition to the regular Bachelor's or Master's degree programme.

The main aim of the Honours programme is to develop talent and initiative. In the Bachelor's Honours Programme, the emphasis is therefore on greater depth and breadth, while the Master's Honours Programme is geared to the development of leadership skills. In both Honours programmes the emphasis is on a multidisciplinary approach to scientific and social issues.

additional subject

Even though the main language used during the course is Dutch, the majority of scientific publications (and textbooks used) are in English. A good command of this language is therefore a prerequisite for a successful study. A good example of an English textbook for the first year of the bachelor programme is Psychological Science by Gazzaniga, Heatherton and Halpern. This book is used in the course 'Introduction to Psychology' and will be used during the first semester: Gazzaniga, M., Heatherton, T., & Halpern, D. (2011), Psychological Science (4th ed.). Norton (ISBN: 9780393914160).Statistical methods play an important role in the context of Psychology, and thus also in the study programme as a whole. During the bachelor programme 35 of the 180 EC (or credits) are devoted to methods and the processing of data.

entry test

The Psychology programme of the University of Groningen has a decentralized selection process. This means that the department decides for itself who will be admitted to the programme. It has been decided to select in this way because we would like to admit the most suitable and best motivated students. We have 850 places to divide. So do not be discouraged to take part in the selection procedures.

The selection procedure consists of 5 steps. Please find further information about this procedure on: http://www.rug.nl/psy/ds

knowledge minimum

Human behaviour is a function of the human brain. There have been important new developments in the field of brain research in the last twenty or thirty years. New techniques now make it possible to study the active brain. As a result, the disciplines of Clinical and Cognitive Neurosciences have become an important part of Psychology. In these disciplines, the relationship between both brain damage or the normal brain and human behaviour are studied. A thorough knowledge of these relationships is now part of the standard curriculum. Basic knowledge of neurobiology and neurophysiology is therefore important for psychology students.

In the bachelor, there is a strong emphasis on scientific research. On the basis of courses in statistics and methodology, you learn how to perform good and ethical research and to evaluate the reliability of your results. Many students experience difficulties with statistics, so it is important to realize in advance that this is part of your studies.

previous education

If you dropped one or more of the subjects mentioned above during your secondary school education (perhaps because they were too difficult or not interesting enough) it might be a good idea to look critically at your wish to study psychology. There is a genuine chance that you will have study delay, if you have trouble with English, mathematics and/or biology.

If you have a secondary school diploma of at least VWO-level (or the equivalent in your own country) you meet the requirements for admission to the Bachelor of Psychology. It does not really matter which profile you selected. English, mathematics and biology do play an important role during your studies, however; and they are therefore highly recommended.

If you have a Dutch vwo-diploma or an equivalent foreign degree, you can apply.

Students who finished their first year of an applied university programme (hbo in Dutch), cannot automatically be admitted to the Bachelor of Psychology. The admissions board may ask for supplementary requirements. Please contact the academic advisor for more information.

Do you not own any of the above mentioned qualifications? There is an exception to the normal admission procedure. If you are not in possession of a first year college (propaedeutic) diploma or a vwo-diploma (or the diploma dates from before 1998) and you are 21 years or older, then you can try to be admitted to the Bachelor programme in Psychology via the University Entrance Examination. For more information about the University Entrance Examination and the admission procedure, you can e-mail the academic advisors through www.rug.nl/gmw/vraagenantwoord (search for University Entrance Examination and ask your additional question).
