This programme addresses both industrial and society-wide problems related to infrastructures, with an emphasis on concurrency engineering, which is a non-trivial discipline.

From sensor networks to space station environments and from multi-core chips to computational grids; the requirements are all very different but the knowledge and skills required to make these systems work are remarkably similar. Each is an asynchronous, concurrent system requiring coordination and synchronisation, but operating on very different timescales and with different computational requirements. This programme addresses both industrial and society-wide problems related to infrastructures, with an emphasis on concurrency engineering, which is a non-trivial discipline. The focus on concurrency and foundation in extensive research expertise in each of these domains is what makes the University of Amsterdam's (UvA) research-based programme truly unique.

The international Master in Computer Science is a two-year Master's programme (120 ECTS credits total). The obligatory core courses and the teaching periods are shown in the table below. Note that all courses are worth 6 ECTS credits. Three restricted electives and three free electives in or related to Computer Science must be taken in addition to the core courses.

Core courses:

  • Introduction to eScience Infrastructure
  • Concurrency Theory
  • Advances in Computer Architecture
  • Concurrent Programming
  • Compilers and Operating Systems
  • Research Lectures

Restricted electives, from which at least three must be chosen:

  • Network Programming
  • Software Evolution
  • Concurrent Systems
  • Theory and Application of Multi-Threading
  • Quantum Computing

Note that this list of restricted electives may be modified over time.

Research project

The research project is worth 48 ECTS credits (i.e. 80 % of the second year). This project is typically supervised by a professor in one the research groups in the Informatics Institute or in collaboration with another industrial or academic group. Research lectures will help you choose a topic for your graduation project and give you breadth in your education.

Professional specialization within the Masters programme

In general, Masters students are trained to become independent researchers. But at the UvA Faculty of Science you can also choose to complete your Masters programme with a professional specialization, that focuses on other skills than doing research. In that case you will follow the programme of your chosen scientific discipline during the first year of your Masters, and the programme of the specialization during the second year.

You will graduate as a Master of Science.

There are two professional specializations available:

  • Science Communication
  • Management, Policy Analysis & Entrepreneurship.

A note to readers who dont speak Dutch: Only the specialization Management, Policy Analysis & Entrepreneurship is described in English, because the other two specializations are only taught in Dutch.
