Areas of specialization include: financial economics, econometrics. The Master's in Statistical and Economic Modeling program is jointly managed and overseen by the Departments of Statistical Science and Economics to train and develop statistical skills linked to economics, finance, and related areas to prepare graduates for Ph.D. studies or related professions. The focus is on theory and methods of statistical science and economics, computational statistics, and interdisciplinary economic applications. Students will study both statistics and economics coursework in depth, and will write a thesis paper based on an individual and mature research project. The degree will emphasize computational statistics and econometrics in a variety of programming languages including SAS, STATA, R, S-Plus, and others.

The program requires 30 credits in statistics and economics. We expect that students will take four semesters to complete all the requirements.

Of these 30 credit hours:

  • 12 credits must be select Statistical Science courses: STA 521, 523, 531, 532, 601, 621, 622, 623, 663, 841, 942, 944 or approved substitutes
  • 12 credits in select Economics courses: ECON 552, 601, 602, 605, 606, 608D, 612, 613, 701, 702, 703, 705, 706, 707 or approved substitutes, with no more than 6 credits from any one of the subfields of Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Econometrics
  • 6 additional credits from some combination of additional graded graduate courses in either Economics or Statistical Science, including approved independent study with STA and/or ECON faculty advisors. Courses in other relevant disciplines may also be counted towards the total subject to approval by the MSEM Directors
