The graduate program in Physiology and Integrative Biology (PIB) offers both PhD and MS degrees with participation of research laboratories from both the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and the Graduate School New Brunswick, this program is designed to provide training at the interface of genomics, cell biology and organismal physiology.

Specific topics include molecular endocrinology, cardiovascular research, cancer biology, membrane structure and signal transduction, host-microbial interaction and the physiological bases of diseases. PhD students will receive full tuition waiver, a stipend, and health benefits for the duration of their studies. Rutgers University campus housing is available to students.PIB is part of the Consolidated Programs in Molecular Biosciences co-sponsored by the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and the Graduate School New Brunswick. Students enter PIB by applying to the Consolidated Programs in Molecular Biosciences. Direct admissions to PIB can also be considered for students with advanced background (e.g. students transferring from other universities with advanced courses or M.S. degree).

In the latter case, certain credit hours can be transferred toward the graduate degree. In addition to the PhD program, a program leading to a Master of Sciences in Physiology and Integrative Biology is offered in PIB to meet the needs of students with particular interests. The Director of the PIB Graduate Program is Huizhou Fan, PhD

Currently, the following techniques and areas of research are available in the program: molecular biology, gene expression, DNA microarray screening, electrophysiology, ion transport, transgenic animal models, cardiovascular physiology, cell signaling, hormone/receptor biology, confocal microscopy, endocrinology, Drosophila, C. elegans and yeast biology, host-microbial interaction and sexually transmitted infections.
