Engaging the geopolitics and transnational cultures as well as the violence and seductions to come out of America’s history as a global cultural, political, economic, military and technological power. With the so-called "transnational turn," American Studies increasingly looks beyond and across national borders. In this programme you explore the politics, culture and society of the United States within its national borders, outside them, as well as at its borders. At the intersection of cultural studies, political science, history, gender and postcolonial studies, the programme is centered throughout on the study of America’s shaping influence on the world and the world’s influence on America.

Unique Characteristics

  • An interdisciplinary approach
  • A transnational, international and comparative methodology that explicitly considers our location within Western Europe
  • A consciously postcolonial sensibility that goes beyond the (European) West to the global politics of America – in the Middle East, Latin America, Asia and Africa.
  • A student centred focus in which students learn to develop their own approach to the material.

The programme contains two obligatory foundation courses, each of which is worth 10 EC study points. These are "American Studies: Theory & Practice" and "America and the World." A central theme is the exchange of cultural and political ideas between North America and Europe and related issues in the field of Americanisation and globalisation. You can explore processes of cultural contact and exchange at the United States' geographical and non-geographical borders in the course "American Borders" or opt for a course on the international cultural and political relationship between Europe and the United States in "Transatlantic Exchange: Europeans and America." Other options include a special course on the Beat Generation, one of America's most influential avant-garde movement; North American Indians; African- American Literature and Culture; American Constitutional Law or the American Public Sphere.
