The MA Program in English Language Teaching aims to provide students with a firm foundation in the cultural, theoretical, and applied aspects of English Language Teaching. The program is designed around three major academic objectives: to foster cultural and contextual knowledge of ELT and English language learners; to instruct students in advanced ELT pedagogies and practices; and to improve interactive English language instruction across diverse instructional mediums. Graduates will develop their capabilities as adaptive and creative thinkers and be equipped with strong academic research skills and superior theoretical and practical knowledge of English language teaching.

The Masters Degree in English Language Teaching is offered with a thesis option only. In this full-time program, students must complete three required courses, five elective courses, and write a Masters Thesis. Upon the successful completion of the requirements of the program, the Masters Degree in English Language Teaching will be awarded.

This is a two-year, full-time program. However, courses are generally scheduled in the evenings to accommodate daytime work and teaching schedules. Part-time enrollment is NOT available.

Admission procedure will be implemented according to the Academic Rules and Regulations Concerning Graduate Studies of METU. Candidates for admission to the MA Program in ELT should have a BA/BS degree in a relevant discipline. Candidates who do not have a BA/BS degree in ELT or similar may be required to attend preparation courses up to 18 credit hours to build up their knowledge in the field. The applications are evaluated on a competitive basis, and applicants are expected to meet the following requirements: 1. Statement of Interest (Letter of Intent) in English. This letter should clearly state the purpose for the candidate's application. The letter can be written or uploaded when completing the online application. 2. Two reference letters. When completing the online application, automatic emails will be sent to referees with links for writing or uploading reference letters. 3. ALES SÖZ: 60 or more required for Turkish Citizens 4. English Proficiency (one of the following): IYS: 85 or more (exam administered by METU) TOEFL CBT: 270 TOEFL IBT: 106 TOEFL PBT + TWE: 623 + 5 IELTS: 8 or more 5. Cumulative Grade Point Average 2.50/4.00 or equivalent While not required, the following information may be added to the candidate's application: Conference participation (with paper presentation) Teaching experience Other professional courses/activities/workshops attendedApplication Procedure Applications to the MA program must be made online by completing and submitting the online application form accessible through the link below. Applications are generally accepted from May 1st until July 30th. Please ensure that you have all the required information at hand and ready to upload before you begin filling out the Application Form. The online application form contains the following 9 steps: Step 1: Personal Details Name, Family Name, Date of Birth, Citizenship/Nationality, Sex Step 2: Contact Information Address, email, phone, etc. Step 3: Educational Background This includes High School and University, your CGPA, including where applicable English proficiency scores and ALES or GRE scores. Step 4: Work Experience Step 5: Academic References Please list the name and contact information for your academic references. Reference letters are required. Automatic emails will be sent to your listed references with links for writing or uploading their reference letters. Step 6: Statement of Interest It is suggested that you write your statement of interest (letter of intent) in MS Word or a similar program, then copy and paste your statement into the space provided in the online form. Step 7: Transcripts Electronic file of transcripts (e.g, scanned copy) of your undergraduate transcript and, if applicable, your English proficiency certificate. Your CV may also be uploaded here. You will be required to furnish original copies of your transcripts and proficiency scores upon arrival at METU NCC.
