Since October 2004, Saarland University Saarbrücken (Germany) has offered an international Master's programme in Language Science and Technology leading to the degree Master of Science (MSc) in four semesters. Saarbrücken is one of the world's leading centres for language science and technology with faculty and students coming from many countries. An active programme of basic, applied and cognitive research is combined with state-of-the-art facilities to provide students with a rich and stimulating environment for their research.

Language requirements

For non-native speakers: TOEFL, IELTS, CAE
For Germans: certification of at least five years of English at school with an average mark of at least 3.5 in the German marking system from the two final years will also fulfil the language requirement.

Academic requirements

Applicants must hold the German "Abitur", "Fachabitur", or an equivalent foreign high school graduation certificate attesting to the qualification for higher education.
Applicants must also hold a Bachelor degree (BSc) or equivalent in (Computational) Linguistics, Language Technology, Cognitive Sciences, Computer Science, or another relevant discipline.

Approx. 200 EUR per semester, including a semester ticket covering public transport in the Saarbrücken area

Costs of living

About 800 EUR per month to cover personal expenses (incl. accommodation)

Job opportunities

The department tries to offer support to as many students as possible via work-study jobs.

Arrival support

If required, our staff can provide support with enrolment, registering for health insurance, etc. A "buddy" system has also been established in which each new student is put in touch with a current student who can act as an informal adviser.

Services and support for international students

Saarland University offers a special support and guidance service for our international students and visiting scholars. As well as welcoming new foreign students to the university, we organise excursions and cultural events where students and scholars from abroad can meet German students and colleagues. We also provide support in dealing with official and administrative matters. To encourage interaction between German and international students, the international office also runs a successful peer mentoring programme called "you and me".

Accommodation

Places in student halls of residence on campus are severely limited, but there are several conveniently located private apartments. Students entering the programme will be informed by staff about the various forms of accommodation available.
