Educational organisation

The selected students will study in at least two countries. A standard mobility of two semesters (one academic year) is recommended, the simplest scheme being a selection of two different locations: one per academic year, according to the specialisation field of the targeted Master's thesis topic.

As an exception, students can visit up to three universities. Students who wish to come back to the University Lille1 for the fourth semester Master's thesis will have to spend the second and/or third semester at another location.

For the first semester, ASC students will have the university of Lille as host university. For the second semester, they can choose between the university of Lille and the university of Leipzig.
The institution for the second year of the Master's programme can be chosen from all partner universities, according to the scientific specialisation of the university and the students' plans for the future. We strongly recommend that the Master's thesis be based on a collaborative project between two of the partner institutions.

The above-mentioned modules comprise lectures, seminars and lab units. Details can be found in the module descriptions.

The individual mobility is discussed and organised during the first semester in Lille, France.

Please see http://www.master-asc.org for updated information.

Study abroad unit(s)

The selected students will study in at least two countries. A two-semester mobility incorporates at least two different partner institutions.
For the first semester, ASC students will have the university of Lille as host university. For the second semester, they can choose between the university of Lille and the university of Leipzig.
The institution for the second year of the Master's programme can be chosen from all partner universities, according to the scientific specialisation of the university and the students' plans for the future.

Please see http://www.master-asc.org for updated information.

Internships

The third semester features a research project case study at a university or an industrial laboratory as a basis for the student's Master's thesis.

Forms of assessment

Written or oral examinations; reports about practical work; Master's thesis during the fourth semester

Course objectives

The MSc "Advanced Spectroscopy in Chemistry" is a two-year (120 ECTS) programme offered by five European universities, providing students with a cross-cultural education while acquainting them with state-of-the-art spectroscopic techniques in a broad range of modern chemistry applications.

The ASC network wants students to become experts and to develop international skills leading to doctoral studies and/or professional industrial careers in chemical analysis and characterisation of the structure of materials.

A mobility scheme ensures that, in addition to high specialisation and access to state-of-the-art technologies, students will follow a common core curriculum of studies at different higher education institutions throughout Europe.

Language requirements

Applicants must provide proof of English language skills at level B2 of CEFR or an equivalent proof. The language performance is part of the admission criteria.

Academic requirements

Online application mandatory on our website: http://www.master-asc.org

General formal requirement: Bachelor's degree in chemistry from a European university or equivalent

All applications are assessed by a centralised consortium commission. The following weighting scheme is applied to the selection criteria, producing a weighted arithmetic mean:
  • academic records of previous studies (coefficient 6)
  • scientific background of undergraduate studies (coefficient 5)
  • ranking of academic institution where undergraduate studies were done (coefficient 2)
  • letter of motivation (coefficient 2)
  • letters of recommendation (coefficient 1)
  • foreign language proficiency (coefficient 2)
  • practical experience (coefficient 1)
  • awards and grants (coefficient 1)

Enrolment fees

Students have to pay an enrolment fee per semester (currently 193.50 EUR in Leipzig).

For the other partner universities, please contact the institution of your choice. See also: http://www.master-asc.org

Costs of living

Approx. 700 EUR per month to cover personal expenses (including rent for a room)
Rooms and apartments are provided by the "Studentenwerk". Rents range between 170-375 EUR, depending on the type of accommodation, room amenities, and the location of the halls.

Job opportunities

See offers in student job market organised by the "Studentenwerk".

Funding opportunities within the university

Some scholarships can be awarded by decision of the academic board, depending on academic records.

A range of mobility scholarships to finance a year outside Germany are available on the ASC website: http://www.master-asc.org

Arrival support

A welcome week for foreign students is organised by the International Centre. Buddies (student tutors) are available on request to assist with administrative and general problems.

Our partner universities have teams who provide support and advice. Local coordinators are available at all of them.

Services and support for international students

Mentors and buddies who will introduce students to the faculty and help them address personal and scientific problems are available on request.

This is the case at all of the partner universities.
