As one of the leading computational linguistics programmes in Germany, the ISCL MA course of study focuses both on current themes in computational linguistics research as well as on practical skills. Students can choose from a wide range of courses in our department and in other departments of Tübingen University. Topics dealt with in our courses include grammar formalisms, machine learning, information retrieval, dialectometry, and computer-aided language learning, to name just a few. By engaging in project-driven work and writing term papers, our students learn how to solve problems on a solid academic basis.

Educational organisation

Students with a BA in computational linguistics can choose relatively freely which courses they want to take. Those with a pure linguistics or computer science background have to catch up on the corresponding counterparts. Many courses offered at our department include hands-on components. It is also possible to take courses at other departments of the university (e.g., computer science or general linguistics) and have them counted as part of the MA degree, with courses external to the department requiring approval by the adviser at the start of the semester.

Forms of assessment

Each seminar is followed by a written or oral exam. Seminars typically require students to present topics in class, work on projects and homework, and complete a final exam or term paper. In the last semester (to finish the MA degree), students take an oral exam and write a MA thesis.

Language requirements

Applicants whose native language is not English must provide proof of their English skills:
CEF Level B2 is required.

Academic requirements

Requirements: a Bachelor's degree in computational linguistics, or equivalent, in a subject appropriate to that of the programme (e.g., a BA in linguistics with good programming skills or a BA in computer science with profound linguistic knowledge). Relevant work experience may also be taken into consideration.

Enrolment fees

142 EUR per semester. A semester ticket covering public transport in the entire region is available for 85 EUR per semester.

Costs of living

Our experience shows that students spend approx. 250 EUR on rent in dormitories and up to 400 EUR on rent in private housing per month. They should budget 400 to 500 EUR for other living expenses every month. Students should also set aside 500 EUR at the beginning of their studies for getting started in Tübingen.

Job opportunities

There are a number of positions for student research assistants in our department, which we traditionally fill with participants from the ISCL programme.

Services and support for international students

The department for International Affairs (Internationale Angelegenheiten) offers all kinds of help and advice to newly accepted international students. Students will be assisted with university policies and paperwork (admissions, residency permits), advice on living in Tübingen, and the like.

Additionally, the Student Services Organisation (Studentenwerk) provides help and advice concerning accommodation, meals, studying with a child, cultural events, and much more.

Our department provides help and advice for its students to facilitate their integration. Tandem partnerships between Germans and international students within the programme will help students adapt to life and studies in Tübingen.

Accommodation

Tübingen University owns several dormitories. When you apply at the Student Services Organisation (Studentenwerk), your application is valid for all these dormitories simultaneously.

To apply for a room, you must fill in an application form for German or International students and send it by fax or post to the Student Services Organisation. Don't forget to include your letter of admission in your application. It is recommended to apply for a room as early as possible, however the earliest date for applications to be accepted is six months before the day you want to move in.

Announcements and advertisements in the private accommodation sector can be found in the local newspaper Schwäbisches Tagblatt on Wednesdays (Mittwochsmarkt). You might also want to consider offers for accommodation in cities and villages around Tübingen, which are usually less expensive and well connected to the university via public transport.

There are many online search websites such as http://www.wg-gesucht.de where you can find free rooms or flats for lease.
