Our Department of Computer and Information Science at the University of Konstanz offers a two-year Master's programme in Computer and Information Science entirely taught in English.

The Master's programme is geared towards the computer-assisted processing of large volumes of data and is designed to provide students interested in the development of complex information and analysis systems with the requisite knowledge.
The Master's programme takes up the research of our research groups* especially in the area of Explorative Analysis and Visualisation of Large Information Spaces. This kind of joint research is unique in Germany and internationally acknowledged.

Our Master's programme is strongly research-oriented and emphasises research-related teaching. Furthermore, it provides exciting opportunities for specialisation in the following fields:

Educational organisation

Semester 1
Master's students:
  • choose an academic supervisor (mentor) who supervises Master's project and thesis
  • choose a study specialisation (study profile) according to their interests and in consultation with their mentor
  • complete 30 advanced course credits (30 ECTS)

Semesters 2 and 3
Master's seminar (4 ECTS), Master's project (9 ECTS)
Master's students complete the remaining advanced course credits (47 ECTS).

Semester 4
Master's thesis (30 ECTS) and Master's colloquium (thesis defence)

Study abroad unit(s)

A study period abroad is not mandatory but highly recommended. We support student mobility (study exchange and placement). Students can benefit from a number of special collaborations with partner departments abroad and a wide range of programmes.

Most common types of examination in lectures are:
  • written exam
  • oral exam
  • assignments
  • intermediate exams

Most common types of examination in seminars are:
  • oral presentation + term paper (10-20 pages)

Final exam period:
  • Master's project final report
  • Master's thesis
  • Master's colloquium (oral thesis defence)

Course objectives

A Master's degree in Computer and Information Science provides students with the opportunity to specialise in a particular area of computer or information science, especially with regard to topics pertaining to the exploration of large volumes of data (data mining), visualisation (visual computing), and human-computer interaction.

Language requirements

Applicants must provide proof of their English proficiency of at least level B2 (CEFR). The following options are accepted:
  • Native speaker or Bachelor's degree from one of the following countries only: USA, UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa
  • Evidence of five years continuous English classes, level German secondary school up to Abitur, minimum grade "befriedigend" (satisfactory) or better
  • Successful completion of a minimum of four courses held in English in a previous relevant study programme in Germany or the Bologna area
  • TOEFL (Internet-based): 90 (Institution Code, Name and Type: B226 U Konstanz Dept Comp/Info Sci)
  • IELTS (academic test): 6
  • Cambridge First Certificate in English: C

Academic requirements

1) A three-year minimum and above average degree in Computer Science, Information Engineering or a related and relevant degree programme from a recognised higher education institution

2) Sufficient grade: good or better (http://www.international.uni.kn/en/international-students/studying-in-konstanz/grading-system/)

3) English proficiency: B2 (CEFR) (see language requirements)

4) GRE revised General Test: 155 for each section (Designated Institution Code (DI): 7174)
The GRE test is mandatory for applicants with a non-Bologna-degree (155 credits for each section: Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning Score)!
