The programme is aimed at students who hold a Bachelor's degree in educational science, psychology, education, secondary school teaching or vocational training (alternatively also the first Staatsexamen). This applies to international students as well as national students. It is taught by renowned professors in the fields of educational and psychological research, teaching research, methods research, teacher education, secondary education, and the teaching methodology of mathematics.

Professional competencies
Students explore key theories, concepts, methods and findings of empirical educational research and focus on teaching and learning in a variety of educational contexts. This enables them to gain coherent knowledge and in-depth understanding of
  • institutions in education systems and quality development and assurance in these institutions
  • teaching and learning processes and their determinants in formal learning settings such as the classroom
  • educational concepts and their assessment

Methodological competencies
Students acquire methodological competencies in relation to the skills and abilities that are relevant to the area of empirical educational research. These include knowledge and skills in key working practices such as researching and preparing literature, summarising relevant empirical studies in written essays, presenting research and project activities using various presentation techniques (PowerPoint, posters, etc.), communicating empirical research to different target groups, acquiring the essential writing skills necessary to produce academic texts and gaining basic knowledge of project and time management.

Social competencies
Thirdly, students acquire social competencies by working together in teams on projects, analysing the various strengths and weaknesses of project participants and using this to implement the project. The Master's programme is characterised by its highly interdisciplinary nature, which means that students regularly work on projects in different team compositions. Students are also required to decide on certain projects and implement them within a fixed timeframe by agreeing on a shared work and time schedule.
By cooperating in this way, they learn how to articulate project interests and decisions and to make coherent academic arguments.

Module 10 (elective): Analysis of variance (5 ECTS)
Module 11 (elective): Video analysis (5 ECTS)
Module 12 (elective): Analysis of interview data, learning journals and portfolios (5 ECTS)
Module 13 (required): Research on teaching and learning: specialisation (5 ECTS)

Master's thesis

Course objectives

The programme provides students with a background in educational science, psychology and teaching with access to in-depth academic training in research on teaching and learning. It aims to qualify them for a career in research or for leadership positions in educational institutions. Thanks to its close links with the Faculty Graduate Centre, the Master's programme also facilitates graduates who wish to subsequently study for a doctorate.

Language requirements

Students whose native language or language of instruction is/was English must submit evidence in the form of certificates of education or citizenship. Applicants whose native language or language of instruction in previous studies was not English must provide proof of language competence in English (level C1):
This can be in the form of a TOEFL test, IELTS test (academic format) or Cambridge Main Suite of English Examinations (CAE or CPE).
Alternatively, proof can be provided by means of a good grade (corresponding to at least 10 out of 15 points) in a German university entrance qualification.
If examinations amounting to 60 credits were successfully completed in examination modules in English in the undergraduate programme, this also proves adequate proficiency in English.

Academic requirements

Eligibility for the Research on Teaching and Learning Master's programme is proven by:
1. A classified Bachelor's degree awarded by a German or foreign university after a programme of at least six semesters or an at least equivalent qualification in the programmes: scientific education for teachers at grammar schools, vocational training, pedagogy/educational science and psychology or comparable programmes
2. Proof of successful participation in either a lecture, seminar, or project in the field of social science methods. (Applicants should have had an initial introduction to basic empirical research methods verifiable by at least one course in the transcript of records.)
3. Adequate knowledge of English - for this purpose, students whose native language or language of instruction in previous studies was not English must provide proof by means of a recognised language test (level C1 of the European Framework) such as the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or the Cambridge Main Suite of English Examinations. Alternatively, proof can be provided by means of a good grade (corresponding to at least 10 out of 15 points) in a German university entrance qualification. If examinations amounting to 60 credits were successfully completed in examination modules in English in the undergraduate programme, this also proves adequate proficiency in English. 4. Passing of the aptitude assessment

Enrolment fees

Approx. 115 EUR per semester, the fee includes a semester ticket covering public transport in Munich.

Costs of living

In order to cover personal expenses while studying in Munich, we recommend that students budget around 800 EUR per month for accommodation, living, health insurance, books, and miscellaneous expenses.

Job opportunities
