Chemistry is a key science that underlies advancements in such fundamental sectors as energy, materials, environment, health, and information technology. Modern synthetic and analytical methodologies are employed not only to elucidate complex natural metabolic pathways for biotechnology or pharmaceutical research, but also to develop new materials with enhanced mechanical and electrical properties.
The Department of Chemistry at Saarland University runs a bi-national Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in collaboration with the École Européenne de Chimie, Polymères et Matériaux (European School of Chemistry, Polymers, and Materials Science) at the University of Strasbourg and the École Nationale Supérieure de Chimie in Rennes (National School (superieure) of Chemistry). The programme offers a solid grounding in the subject and aims to teach students the knowledge and skills needed to tackle and solve chemical problems. In addition to the three core areas of inorganic/analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, and physical chemistry, students on the BSc programme at Saarland University are offered modules in chemical engineering, macromolecular chemistry, and biochemistry. The bi-national degree programme also provides an excellent opportunity for students to practice their foreign language skills and develop their intercultural competence.
The programme is supported by the Deutsch-Französische Hochschule DFH (Franco-German University). Students from France and Germany therefore receive financial support while studying in the partner country. As the bi-national BSc in Chemistry has been integrated into the DFH academic portfolio, specially tailored German and French preparatory courses and language training courses are available.
After graduating from the BSc programme, students can continue to study for the four-semester Master's qualification.

Arrival support

The International Office can help incoming students with a number of issues that need to be dealt with on arrival: finding suitable accommodation, registering with the university and with local authorities. The International Office also organises social and recreational events and intercultural training sessions.

Services and support for international students

Saarland University offers a special support and guidance service for our international students and visiting scholars. Besides welcoming new foreign students to the university, we organise excursions and cultural events at which students and scholars from abroad can meet German students and colleagues. Moreover, we also provide support in dealing with official and administrative matters. To encourage interaction between German and international students, the international office also runs the successful peer mentoring programme "you and me".
