European Wind Energy Master (EWEM)

Study mode:On campus Study type:Full-time Languages: English
Deadline: Apr 1, 2025
StudyQA ranking:4420 Duration:2 years
EWEM is a two-year (120 ECTS) Master's course. The joint first semester and the specific, multidisciplinary and project-oriented teaching will give students the ability to transfer knowledge and competences beyond their area of specialisation and to embed design choices in a socio-technical context. Students acquire knowledge in theoretical and applied sciences underlying wind energy systems, and specific competencies necessary to operate in their chosen area of specialisation.

The European Wind Energy Master consortium is composed of four universities, world leaders in Wind Energy and Offshore Wind Energy research and education:
  • Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), Coordinator
  • Technical University of Denmark, Copenhagen (DTU)
  • Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim (NTNU)
  • Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg

EWEM prepares graduates for a career in research, both in industry and in academia, and is closely linked to the partners' research programmes, in particular the large Wind Energy PhD cohort of the four partner universities, with over 130 PhD students.

The programme is divided into four tracks of specialisation along the wind energy conversion chain: Wind Physics, Rotor Design, Electric Power Systems and Offshore Engineering, mutually connected by their application to wind energy technology.

Educational organisation

Students gain specific knowledge by following one of the MSc tracks: Wind Physics, Rotor Design, Electric Power Systems or Offshore Engineering. Courses, practical courses and assignments/projects are complemented by a directed internship and a supervised final MSc project. Consolidation of the theoretical content is achieved in a range of experimental and computational assignments.

To expose students to state-of-the-art and new challenges in Wind Energy, the programme is complemented by the EWEM Summer School event, regular EWEM Symposia by guest lecturers from associated partners, and the EWEM Innovation and Entrepreneurship Workshop.

EWEM track structure: each EWEM is a two-year joint programme (120 ECTS) with seven distinct elements:

  • Introduction (10 ECTS): held at DTU, this consists of the course Wind Energy Technology and Aerodynamics (10 ECTS). The course introduces the full EWEM students cohort to Wind Energy technology and the role of the graduate as a technological agent, including technology valorisation, team work and management perspective.

  • Specialisation (49-61 ECTS): this block includes compulsory (core) and elective courses, both on the specialisation (applied and fundamental), and general competences such as scientific writing, research methodologies and languages.

  • Summer School: guest lecturers from industry and academia lecture on Wind Energy R&D, market and general competences, spanning the four specialisations. It is optional and free of charge for EWEM students and EWEM alumni, and will be integrated with the EAWE PhD Summer School, becoming a network point for MSc and PhD students, academic research staff and industry.

  • EWEM Symposia: regular symposia by guest lecturers/researchers from our associate partners and by PhD students from the consortium, exposing students to the state of the art in research

  • EWEM Innovation and Entrepreneurship Workshop: graduates will be ethical agents, acting as research entrepreneurs in the Wind Energy innovation process. Following up on the content of the TEMO course (first semester), Internship, Summer School and EWEM Symposia, this workshop focuses on: Knowledge Value Chain management, organisation of knowledge processes, technology trees, technology/market maturity analyses, intellectual property and developing a business model.

  • Internship (6-9 ECTS): students can undertake their internship with EWEM-associated partners or propose their own internship at other institutions; it can also be integrated with the MSc thesis. Students develop skills in evaluating professional standards with respect to sustainable development, project and risk management, value management, health and safety management, knowledge management, business operation and organisational culture, policies and processes.

  • MSc thesis (30-45 ECTS): the thesis work can be carried out at any of the partner institutions or associated partners independently of the specialisation, and is jointly supervised by supervisors from the two diploma-awarding partners in the study track, and possibly a third local supervisor. The list of available thesis topics is agreed upon by the EWEM Academic Board and associated partners, who verify the feasibility and quality of the research questions and methodology. Students are also encouraged to propose their own topics for their MSc thesis. The thesis is an individual, in-depth research or expert design project. Students can carry out an in-depth mono-disciplinary thesis project or link their thesis to a multidisciplinary project. For the Wind Physics track, the thesis work is rewarded with 30 ECTS. For the remaining tracks, thesis work is 45 ECTS, consisting of 15 ECTS of thesis definition work performed during the third semester (literature review, definition of the research question, definition of methodology and selection of tools) and a 30 ECTS thesis in the fourth semester.

This is a double degree programme.

Study abroad unit(s)

EWEM starts in the first semester at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Students then move on to other partner universities depending on the track they are enrolled in. The University of Oldenburg teaches the Wind Physics track in the second and fourth semesters; the third semester is supplied by DTU. During the fourth semester, when students do research and write their Master's theses, they are enrolled at the University of Oldenburg but are free to choose the location of their research at one of the other partner universities or associated partners in industry and research.

Internships

An internship of six weeks is to be completed in a research institution or company and will be rewarded with nine ECTS credit points. It can also be integrated with the Master's thesis. Programme advisers will assist students with internship assignments or in finding appropriate institutions.

Forms of assessment

Written or oral exams after the lecture period, controlled lab reports, written thesis, defence of written thesis

Course objectives

The EWEM programme aims to train students in emerging research domains with a high potential impact to shape the future of the wind energy sector. It prepares students for employment in multidisciplinary departments in industry and/or for continuing their studies within PhD programmes.

After completing the EWEM programme, graduates will
  • understand the product development process applied within and outside wind energy
  • be able to apply and/or improve a scientific methodology to improve product development
  • possesses the competencies necessary for the design and implementation of complex wind energy systems and their components in one of the four specialisation tracks
  • be able to contribute to the formulation and implementation of a research project

The joint introduction in the first semester and specific multidisciplinary and project-oriented teaching instruments will provide students with the ability to transfer knowledge and competences beyond the limits of their specialisation and to embed design choices in a socio-technical context.

Students will acquire knowledge in both theoretical and applied sciences underlying wind energy systems in general and the chosen specialisation track, which will allow them to adapt quickly to changes in this constantly evolving field, and specific competencies necessary to operate in the chosen area of specialisation.

Students will also attain expertise in putting their knowledge into practice by participating in laboratory projects and the internship placement. Moreover, students will attain practical project management skills which are necessary for an effective application of the acquired knowledge.

The international dimension of the EWEM programme guarantees that students familiarise themselves with different educational methods and a multicultural education.

Language requirements

Applicants must provide proof of their English language proficiency (certificates older than two years are not accepted):
  • A TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of at least 90 (internet-based test) Please note that we only accept the TOEFL internet-based test.
