Complex systems with a technological, biological or socio-economic background determine our everyday life. The challenge of modelling these complex systems mathematically demands the following prototypic profile of an "expert mastering a repertoire of modern mathematical and computer based methods for mode.ling, simulating and optimising complex systems and knowing how to combine those methods for solving real-world problems".
The term expert is understood in the sense of a generalist and not a specialist, since this programme aims at teaching a broad spectrum of modern methods.
The two-years English-taught Master's programme in Mathematical Modelling of Complex Systems focuses on advanced techniques of modelling, simulation, and optimisation. A substantial set of elective courses allows concentration on areas of individual interest. A mobility window enables the students to study abroad and gain scientific and cultural experience at international partner universities. This programme uses English as the medium of instruction, since its graduates will enter a highly globalised work and research community. Besides that, the participation and enrolment of international candidates is explicitly welcomed.
Application oriented, interdisciplinary seminars link the theoretical basics and concepts of modelling and simulation. Students work in small teams to solve real-world problems. This teamwork reflects typical work in applied sciences and corresponds to our paradigm of an "expert mastering a repertoire of methods to solve problems".

Educational organisation

The first three semesters of the two-year Master's programme in Mathematical Modelling of Complex Systems consist of core courses in applied mathematics and applied physics. Elective courses in applied mathematics, applied physics and computer sciences allow each student to set an individual focus. Active use of the gained knowledge and its application to the solution of real-world problems is taught and practised in a project seminar. This project seminar can be carried out in a three-month period at a research institution, enterprise or at university. The Master's thesis in the last semester and dealing with modelling and simulating a real-world problem, shows the student's ability to perform independent research work.

Study abroad unit(s)

The institute is a member of ECMI (= European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry) and collaborates in international research projects. Thus, the institute has international connections for stays abroad (in Europe, the US, China, India or Indonesia) and supports and advises students if they interested in spending some time abroad.

Forms of assessment

The core and elective courses typically include a written or oral exam. The project seminar is graded based an oral presentation and a written report of the project results.

Course objectives

The Master's degree in Mathematical Modelling of Complex Systems is to give those possessing extended skills in mathematics, physics and computer science in theory, the opportunity for experiments and practical application. These skills are complemented with further knowledge in additional topics, individually selected by each student. The degree entitles its holder to exercise professional work in the field of applied mathematics and/or mathematical modelling in science or industry. Graduates are also able to pursue a PhD programme in related fields.

Language requirements

Applicants must have a good knowledge of spoken and written English equivalent to level B2 or a certificate that previous education was carried out in English
German is not a requirement in order to study this Master's programme, but we recommend that students learn some basic German for daily use.

BSc degree or equivalent in Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics, Computer Science or a related field

Enrolment fees

Currently 214 EUR per semester, covering contributions to the student body, the student union, and local public transport

Costs of living

We estimate that you need around 600-800 EUR per month for rent, food, books, clothes, phone, health insurance, semester contribution, and recreational activities.

Job opportunities

A limited number of jobs are available at the university (i.e. as study assistants). Students who speak good German can also find part-time jobs outside the university.
Please note: Due to the intensive nature of the programme, students might find it difficult to work while studying.

Funding opportunities within the university

The university has a limited number of scholarships to support excellent international students in our international Master's programmes during their first semester. The scholarship covers 400 EUR per month during the first semester at the University of Koblenz-Landau.

Arrival support

Prior to their arrival, international students are already in contact with the Welcome Center and the programme adviser.
The student body offers an orientation week, which helps foreign students settle in and feel comfortable at the university. Additionally, buddies assist international students with administrative matters.

Services and support for international students

The Welcome Center on campus is the main point of contact for students regarding administrative matters. Intensive support is also provided by the advisory service, lecturers, and professors of the Master's programmes.
Buddies (older or graduate students) are paired with incoming students and offer support in everyday situations.
Furthermore, due to the small number of students, direct contact and communication between students of different semesters is easy.

Accommodation

Accommodation is available in student residences or on the private housing market. A certain number of rooms in student residences is reserved for incoming international students.
