Neuroethology

Study mode:On campus Study type:Full-time Languages: English
Deadline: Jul 15, 2024
140 place StudyQA ranking:3199 Duration:2 years
The programme gives an overview of the fields of neurobiology, behavioural physiology and sociobiology. This includes aspects of neurogenetics and behaviour as well as the interaction of individuals in social groups. The students learn basic principles of how the brain controls behaviour and of chronobiology/endogenous clocks. They also learn integrative approaches to elucidate complex correlations in the field of behavioural biology. They obtain insight into current research in the field. The two topics selected provide both theoretical and experimental skills. Each topic consists of two theory modules and a practical course unit. Further specialised research training is provided in a selected field of interest. The students are actively involved in ongoing research projects. They learn to independently plan and perform both theoretical and experimental work and finally, to summarise and discuss their obtained results.

Educational organisation

The study programme Neuroethology is a combination of two major topics, i.e. neurobiology and behavioural physiology/sociobiology. During the first year of the programme, the students enrol in two theoretical courses and one practical course in each of the two topics. All modules are accompanied by a graded examination. In semesters three and four, further specialised research training is provided in a selected field of interest. The students are actively involved in ongoing research projects. They learn to independently plan and perform both theoretical and experimental work. They also learn to summarise and discuss the obtained results in their thesis. The thesis has to be presented and defended in a final colloquium. The thesis (25 ECTS) is preceded by an ungraded preparatory practical course of 12 weeks (15 ECTS).
Further modules (15 ECTS) are selected within the sub-area "Additional Qualifications" to cover special aspects of interest. These modules will not be graded (pass/fail only).

Study abroad unit(s)

Optional

Forms of assessment

Graded exam, oral presentation in seminars, and combinations thereof (theory modules, 10 ECTS; or additional qualifications, 5 ECTS), scientific protocol/report (practical courses, graded, 10 ECTS), scientific report and discussion (thesis, graded, 25 ECTS), thesis colloquium (graded, 5 ECTS)

Course objectives

Building on a Bachelor's degree in biology/life sciences, the students become familiar with various aspects of neurobiology and organismic biology with a special focus on neuroethology. Particular topics within the programme profile provide theoretical knowledge, training in state-of-the-art techniques from the molecular to the organismic level, and skills in scientific thinking, experimental planning and critical interpretation of research results obtained. The students are enabled to address scientific questions in the fields of neurobiology, behavioural biology and the various interactions of organisms and populations in complex social groups. They know how to approach scientific problems both theoretically and experimentally and are able to develop evidence-based scientific models and hypotheses.
