The enormous technical progress during the last two decades have resulted in highly innovative products and services that are based on mathematical achievements more than ever before. Modern mathematics is at the heart of an increasing number of innovations in the field of digital communication, satellite navigation, e-commerce, medical technology, and consumer electronics. Without modern mathematics, there would be no navigation system, no mobile phone, no secure payment on the Internet, no digital TV, and no MP3 player. Also there would be no efficient web search, no Blu-ray discs ,and no digital rights management (DRM). Modelling and simulation of computer and communication networks as well as social network analysis are also based on profound mathematical knowledge and methods. Current and previous developments in these highly innovative fields have led to a new understanding of mathematics. Modern mathematics is not only an auxiliary science for other sciences to solve technical and economic problems; it is considered as an independent, genuine technology nowadays. Its main characteristics are its algorithmic and technology-driven approach, combined with industrial relevance and innovation. The goal of this Bachelor's degree programme in Applied Mathematics is to persuade young people to participate in these ongoing developments in a most competent and comprehensive way and to give them a promising perspective for a professional career in the field of mathematics and its applications to digital media.

The focus is on the training of mathematicians who are working at the interface to computer science and information technology and are capable of solving difficult and complex mathematical problems in the context of digital media using computers quickly and efficiently. The course promotes the development of independent and creative ways of working and provides the ability to engage in lifelong learning, teamwork, and interdisciplinarity.

A key feature of the study programme is the focus on technologically relevant subject fields of mathematics without neglecting the broad foundations of a solid mathematical education.

Mathematical compulsory modules: Analysis I-III, Linear Algebra I/II, Algebra, Numerical Mathematics, Optimisation, Stochastics I, Stochastics II, Graphs and Networks, Information and Coding Theory, Cryptology, Pattern Recognition in Multimedia Data, Project "Mathematics in Digital Media", Practice Module, Bachelor' Project

Mathematical selection modules: Game Theory, Data Mining

Further selection modules: Computer Science I, Computer Science II, Digital Image Processing, Algorithms and Data Structures, Media and Communication Basics, Scientific Writing

Selective Language Courses: German for Foreigners I, German for Foreigners II, Technical English

German for Foreigners I and II is a German language course, running over two semesters and leading students from language level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) to level B2. The proof of B2 is obligatory to enrol in the third semester.

Forms of assessment

All modules conclude with a final exam with a mix of written exams, oral exams, seminar discussions, or lab work. In some modules, students may choose a different type of exam, e.g., a written exam instead of an oral exam. For successful graduation, a total of 180 ECTS credits must be acquired, whereby 30 credits are achievable per semester and 5 credits are assigned per module. 15 credits are awarded for the practice module and another 15 credits for the Bachelor's thesis and the final colloquium.

Course objectives

After completing the course, the students are able to start a professional career as mathematicians in a technical application field or begin a Master's course in mathematics, computer science, or any other related field. They know the mathematical foundations of information security, coding and data compression, digital image processing, and pattern recognition in multimedia data, and have substantial programming skills and knowledge of mathematical software.

Language requirements

German language proficiency is required at minimum level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). We accept the following examinations:
  • B1 certificate from Goethe Institute
  • Deutsches Sprachdiplom (DSD) Stufe 1 (Stufe GER A2/B1)
  • TELC examination B1

English language proficiency is required at minimum level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). We accept among others the following examinations:
  • TOEFL Internet-based (iBT) at least 79 points, computer-based (CBT) at least 213 points
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System) at least Band 6.0
  • Cambridge Certificate: First Certificate in English (FCE)
  • Cambridge English (ESOL)

Academic requirements

Please submit the following documents as a verified copy of the original with a verified English or German translation of the original:
  • secondary school leaving certificate
  • passed university admission examination (if you passed it in your country)
  • proof of one or two years of studies in the home country with a list of all subjects and marks from each semester

Applicants from China, Mongolia, and Vietnam should also submit the APS-Certificate.

Job opportunities can be found in the nearby cities of Chemnitz, Leipzig, and Dresden. You will have enough time for work during the semester break (February/August/September).

The International Office gives individual advice and support. It recommends travel connections, advises you with regard to accommodation, and informs you about all necessary administrative tasks during arrival and during your studies.

Services and support for international students

Academic counselling of students by professors during the studies is provided in English. Each professor regularly offers individual office hours for students regarding all study matters. The International Office offers administrative support for international students to clear all formalities in regard to foreigner's registration office, health insurance, and opening a bank account. It provides a campus tour as well as a tour through the town of Mittweida. The International Students' Club, called the Cosmopolitan Club (https://www.hs-mittweida.de/index.php?id=705.), helps you to find friends and to solve problems during your studies. Each semester, it organises excursions and a wide range of other cultural events for foreign students. You can relax in the evenings, watch films, dance or simply talk to other students in the students' club.

Accommodation

We assist you in finding a place in one of our dormitories near the university. Therefore, you need to fill out the online application form for accommodation. You should request it in the International Office. Please note that you cannot arrive during the weekend or on official holidays.
