The university graduate course is conducted as an integrated under-graduate and graduate course in veterinary medicine and lasts 6 years (12 semesters). Upon completion, the academic title of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine is awarded.

In the first four years, students attend theoretical and practical classes in social, basic, zootechnical, pre-clinical and some clinical subjects. In the last two years of the course they take part in theoretical and practical classes in regular clinical subjects, courses related to public health, and mandatory elective subjects according to their chosen orientation (Farm Animals and Horses; Hygiene and Technology of Animal Foodstuffs and Veterinary Public Health; Household Pets).  In addition they take part in practical work in veterinary organizations, farms and the food industry (extra-faculty classes in out-patient clinics and organized professional field work), whereby they are able to acquire the complete knowledge and skills they need for their future profession.

During their studies, the students also take elective subjects which account for about 20% of their study programme.  The choice is relatively large, and the subjects are divided into general joint subjects for all three orientations, and subjects related to individual orientations.  The students may select them in the semester in which they have enrolled, but also later during their course, when they see the need for additional knowledge according to their own inclinations.  In this way, students shape their own qualifications.

Upon completion of the integrated under-graduate and graduate course in veterinary medicine, students are trained for: treating animals; resolving issues in veterinary public health, protection of people and the environment, in-field, clinical and laboratory diagnostics, preventively combating infectious diseases and zoonoses, planning and participating in programmes to develop and improve work in livestock farming and production of food of animal origin, development of all forms of protection of animals and the environment, and nurturing ethics and a humane relationship towards animals.
