The MA in Medieval Studies offers unparalleled opportunities to all those interested in the study of the medieval world.

This new taught interdisciplinary postgraduate programme offers you the very rare opportunity of putting together your own tailor-made programme of modules offered by History, English, Art History, French, Classics, Archaeology, Music and Continuing Education: the schools and departments that comprise The Institute for Medieval Research at Nottingham.

Under the guidance of experts in a wide variety of medieval subjects, you will explore the connections and contrasts between the various disciplines, the sources they employ, and the intellectual issues relevant to medieval studies.

As such, this programme maximises your choice in terms of subject matter whilst offering guidance in how to relate the different forms of evidence to each other.

This degree is suitable for those of you who want to continue and supplement their first degree, as well as those who wish to further their interests in Medieval Studies at a more advanced level.

Course Content

You will study two discipline-specific core modules from a choice of:

* Research Methods in Archaeology
* Basic Techniques in Medieval English Studies
* World of the Vikings: Research Approaches and Methodology in Viking Studies
* Power and Authority: Records of the Medieval World

You will then be able to choose a further 90 credits´ worth of optional modules from an approved list across the schools and departments that comprise the Institute of Medieval Studies.

These options may also include language-based modules such as Medieval Latin and Reading Old French.

Over the summer period, you will undertake a 60-credit dissertation of 15,000-20,000 words on the subject of your choice.

If you attain AHRC funding and wish to progress to PhD level after this MA, you will be required to take 15 credits´ worth of modules in generic research skills through the University´s Graduate School.

Please note that all module details are subject to change.

Course Structure
This course can be taken on a full-time basis over 1 year or part-time over 2 years.

You will be required to take 120 credits´ worth of taught modules - 30 credits come from compulsory core modules and 90 credits come from optional modules - before completing a 60-credit dissertation under the supervision of an appropriate member of the academic staff associated with the Institute of Medieval Studies.
