The MA in History provides an excellent opportunity for those who wish to continue their academic studies beyond the undergraduate level. It is a flexible course which will provide you with an opportunity to develop and expand upon your particular historical interests.

You will be able to create your own programme of study by choosing particular pathways or combinations of modules from inside and outside the School. The pathways currently available reflect the research interests of staff and cover:

* Medieval History
* Modern History
* Gender History
* British History
* Warrior Societies
* Islamic and Middle Eastern History
* Robin Hood Studies

If you wish, you can opt out of the pathway system in order to develop your own interests.

The course is suitable both for those who wish to further their interests at a level higher than undergraduate and for those who want to supplement their first degree with more detailed study.

The compulsory elements of this degree are:

* A 10,000-12,000 word dissertation
* A training module entitled `Research Skills for Historians´
* A module dealing with Theory and Evidence in History

The range of optional modules varies each year but currently there are approximately 20 different options available dealing with subjects as diverse as crime and criminality in Revolutionary Russia, the history of childhood in the 19th century and Christian-Muslim relations in the Medieval Mediterranean.

For information specific to each of the pathways on offer, please click on the relevant pathway title below:

* Medieval History
* Modern History
* Gender History
* British History
* Warrior Societies
* Islamic and Middle Eastern History
* Robin Hood Studies

Please note that all module details are subject to change.

Course Structure
This course can be taken full-time over 1 year or part-time over 2 years.

You will be required to take a number of core modules - one of which will be appropriate to your chosen pathway - in order to give you the skills necessary for an extended piece of independent research in your subject area.

Over the course of two semesters, you will complete 120 credits´ worth of core and optional modules. You will then be expected to undertake a 60-credit supervised dissertation in a subject area relevant to the pathway you have followed (although we do offer you the choice of opting out of the pathway system altogether in order to create your own pathway of study leading towards your dissertation).

Modules are typically assessed through a written piece of coursework.

It is also possible to take the taught components of this course without completing the dissertation in order to attain the award of Postgraduate Diploma in History.

In addition, we offer an MA in History (Research), which follows a similar programme of study to the MA in History but places further emphasis on research training and the dissertation.
