The Masters Programme in Quaternary Science and Climate Development provides students with in-depth knowledge about climate and environmental changes, in different time-scales, and in different geographical regions. Knowledge about natural and anthropogenic climate changes is important for the understanding of the development of the Earth during the Quaternary Period (the last 2.6 million years).

Students will learn methods for reconstructing the climate in different environments, and methods for the interpretation of the glacial landscape. The knowledge gained in the programme will enable students to evaluate statements in the current debate on natural or human-induced climate change.

The first year consists of three compulsory courses and one elective course focusing on Quaternary stratigraphy and climate variation and methods for dating and reconstructing Quaternary environments. At least one longer field course is included in the first year of the programme. GE7016 Natural archives for Reconstruction of Climate and Environmental Change 15 higher education credits GE7004 Global Climate and Environmental Change 15 higher education credits Optional course, recommended: GE7037 Quaternary Stratigraphy and Dating Methods 15 higher education credits GE7001 Glacial Sedimentology and Morphology 15 higher education credits

During the second year students will complete a Masters thesis, in addition to coursework.

From Autumn term 2013:
The two-year Masters Programme consists of 120 credits (HECs)

* 45 credits Mandatory advanced courses
* 15 credits Elective courses
* 15-30 credits Optional courses
* 30-60 credits Thesis (mandatory)

The number of optional courses taken will be dependent on the period of time devoted to the Master Thesis, which may extend over one or two terms.

The first year consists of six mandatory courses and two elective courses

* Quaternary Environments, 7.5 credits
* Paleoecological Methods, 7.5 credits
* Elective course, 7.5 credits or Applied Quaternary Geology, 7.5 credits
* Quaternary Climate History, 7.5 credits
* Quaternary Dating Methods, 7.5 credits
* Elective course, 7.5 credits
* Quaternary Sedimentology, 7.5 credits
* Paleoglaciology, 7.5 credits

The second year

* Optional course, 15/30 credits
* Degree Project in Physical Geography and Quaternary Geology 30/40/60 credits

Language of instruction

* English.
