A knowledge and critical understanding of clinical research methods are becoming increasingly important skills for all professionals in the health, social care and private sectors, where an evidence based approach, supported by academic rigour is crucial to decision making, clinical practice and delivery of integrated services.

The MRes Clinical Research will provide you with training in quantitative and qualitative research methods and applied data analysis from basic to advanced levels as well as provide opportunities to apply this research knowledge to clinical settings.

* Formal assessments will be conducted via: essays, a systematic review, a research proposal, critical reviews, written examinations and a research project on an approved topic. In addition, there are short practical assignments throughout the course during sessions.

Teaching and Assessment
Teaching is conducted via a mixture of lectures, class discussions and seminars, student presentations, poster presentations, analysis of case studies, worked examples, interactive computer-based exercises, an online VLE and self directed reading.

Formal assessments will be conducted via: essays, a systematic review, a research proposal, critical reviews, written examinations and a research project on an approved topic. In addition, there are short practical assignments throughout the course during sessions.

The course will enable you to:

* Independently design, develop and conduct research relevant to clinical practice
* Critically appraise current research in the field (evidence based health care)
* Apply research findings to improve health and the effective delivery of health services in clinical practice
* Develop a collaborative, inter-disciplinary and ethical approach to your research and work
* Recognise the applicability and limits of the models and methods you use
* Increase your confidence in understanding and using applied data analyses methods
* Apply research knowledge to clinical research as part of a work-based placement learning module.

The course is taught by staff who are expert in a range of research methodologies and the health professions. You will be given the opportunity to explore the application of advanced level research and undertake high quality, publishable research via a dissertation. You will gain the skills to influence and lead health service related delivery, policy and innovation at both population and community levels - enabling you to develop and enhance your career aspirations.

Course Structure
Postgraduate students are expected to allocate an average of 150 hours of taught and self-directed learning per 15 credit module.

Core modules

The MRes Clinical Research consists of six core modules:

* Introduction to research methods and applied data analysis
* Advanced research methods
* Advanced research methods for applied data analysis
* Work based clinical project
* The application of research in clinical settings
* Clinical research dissertation

The degree is for qualified healthcare professionals from a range of primary care or allied health disciplines who are already engaged in or seeking a career in clinical research and includes: * Nurses * Midwives * Medical practitioners * Radiographers * Optometrists * Speech and language therapists * Physiotherapists * Dieticians * Chiropodists / podiatrists * Clinical psychologists * Art/music therapistsEntry requirements * A good honours degree, upper second class or equivalent * An upper second class or higher mark in undergraduate or postgraduate dissertation * At least one year experience of working as a clinician in the health sector * Be registered with a relevant UK professional body * Currently working in a clinical health care environmentFor students whose first language is not English, one of the following qualifications is also required: * IELTS: 6.5 * TOEFL (internet-based): 107 English Language Requirements IELTS band: 6.5 TOEFL iBT® test: 107 IMPORTANT NOTE: Since April 2014 the ETS tests (including TOEFL and TOEIC) are no longer accepted for Tier 4 visa applications to the United Kingdom. The university might still accept these tests to admit you to the university, but if you require a Tier 4 visa to enter the UK and begin your degree programme, these tests will not be sufficient to obtain your Visa.
