Biomedical Engineering at Rutgers University was initially established in 1965 as a track within Electrical Engineering, offering M.S. Degrees with a BME emphasis. In 1986, NJ formally chartered the Department of Biomedical Engineering as an independent entity within the School of Engineering with granting rights for M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. A third degree, Masters of Engineering (M.Eng) , was approved in June 2012 in BME. The department developed its graduate program in collaboration with RWJ/UMDNJ to provide a strong foundation in biomedical and clinical sciences along with rigorous engineering training.

BME includes over 75 faculty from Rutgers science and engineering, RWJ, other academic institutions in the area as well as local industry contacts. M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in the program are jointly awarded with Rutgers-GSNB and Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences-GSBS.

The BME program was among the most highly ranked Rutgers SoE programs based on the NRC ratings of 2010. Notably, the BME program visibility rose significantly since the last NRC reviews and now ranks well within the top 30% of the 74 schools reviewed. The BME program was cited by Rutgers for significant rise in its prominence. Based on the reputational ratings (R-scores), Rutgers BME ranked ELEVENTH among all public institutions and 22nd among all institutions. In terms of its institutional peers, Rutgers BME ranked favorably compared to other reputed BME programs including Cornell University, University of Texas-Austin, Washington University, Columbia University, and RPI, to name a few select Universities
