The course is designed to train qualified radiographers in the practice of nuclear medicine imaging and to provide patients and healthcare services with an ongoing source of excellence in this specialty.

The course curriculum is developed to ensure that students attain an appropriate level of knowledge and experience in the following areas of nuclear medicine imaging:

(a) academic and theoretical knowledge,

(b) clinical and practical experience and

(c) organisational and management experience.

The radiographer would thus be able to adapt and change as knowledge inevitably develops in this progressing field.
The Diploma course incorporates both taught and practical components with the taught component forming a substantial part of the course.
An associated M.Sc. in Medical Imaging is available to candidates who have achieved distinction in the postgraduate diploma year or who otherwise satisfy the course committee. Students who are interested in this option forego the award of the diploma and proceed to perform research on a chosen topic to be presented as a dissertation for examination for the degree of M.Sc.

The course is designed to:

* Give candidates a solid academic base in the understanding of radionuclide imaging techniques and the use and safety requirements of radioisotopes.
* Provide the candidates with a high level of practical experience in this imaging modality.
* Enable the radiographer to adapt and change as knowledge inevitably develops in this progressing field

The student choosing Nuclear Medicine as a specialist career should have a strong interest in advanced imaging skills, direct patient contact, laboratory procedures, computer analysis skills, radiation protection and quality assurance procedures. The ability to manage and organise a quality Nuclear Medicine service with direct interaction with physicians and other health care professionals is critical. Management of close patient contact and interaction with the family is also encouraged".
