The Master's degree in Architecture-based Enterprise Systems Engineering is intended to educate senior engineers and engineering managers to the problems and emerging solution approaches that can enable their enterprises to better respond to the challenges of globally distributed operations in complex, highly dynamic, event-driven environments. An "integrated perspective" that merges the views of management and engineering communities is increasingly recognized as one of the cornerstones of a successful approach to enterprise complexity and is a key aspect of the AESE program.

Led by faculty from UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering and UCSD Rady School of Management, the graduate-level curriculum which is managed by these departments along with the UCSD Department of Computer Science and Engineering, will guide professionals to respond and adapt to their enterprise in timely, innovative, and effective manners. The program will address the challenges and issues that arise within an enterprise in attempting to develop and evolve the Enterprise Knowledge System (EKS) that must support the process implied in the preceding discussion.

Team Project

The capstone team project, equivalent to four courses/year, will be conducted throughout execution of the program. A topic will be selected during the first quarter of enrollment in the program and will be worked in conjunction with industrial partners. Performance on the Capstone team project will be used as the primary measure of the student's learning the AESE program. Progress on the project, as assessed in the context of each course, will be a major determinant for the grade assigned to the individual student. Each student will be evaluated based on their grasp of the course material and their ability to apply the course material to the team project.

  • Each of the nine academic courses has an individual final exam and a team project final exam
  • Individual course grades are determined from class participation and results of the individual and team exams
  • Courses are all structured as a mixture of faculty lecture including case studies, hands-on in-class exercisis, and team project development
  • Students provide detailed evaluations at the end of each course

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, science, or mathematics
  • Minimum undergraduate/post-baccalaureate record (a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the final two years of study expected)
  • Minimum of five years of relevant work experience or equivalent
  • Completion of online application for graduate admission
  • Resume or curriculum vitae illustrating experience and achievements
  • Compelling statement of purpose including a description of individual strengths and interests and how the program will benefit the applicant professionally including a statement of interest in the broad issues associated with enterprise-wide development of knowledge and decision support systems
  • Description of a proposed enterprise systems engineering capstone project (Students who do not have a project idea at the time of admission will be assigned a project by the AESE Co-Directors upon start of the program).
  • Strength of the letters of recommendation (3)
  • TOEFL scores (English as a second language applicants only)
  • NOTE: GRE/GMAT results are not required for the MAS degree.
