The PhD program at the Faculty of Management (FMAN) is primarily intended for candidates who aspire to a career in academia. Some graduates may also take positions in public or private sector organizations involved in research, management training, or consultancy. The goal is to have graduates who can perform and contribute at an international level in any of these possible career paths.

The PhD program is open to candidates with a background in business, economics, social sciences, as well as engineering or natural sciences. If the applicants have not been exposed to core business subjects during undergraduate or graduate studies, they may be required to enroll for an additional one or two term preparatory period. Such a period may require that students take master's level courses specified by the FMAN's PhD Committee. Upon successful completion of this period, the student is admitted to the PhD program. Currently the PhD program offers specializations in Management and Organization, Operations and Supply Chain Management and Finance.

The program has a strong research orientation where participants are expected to be closely involved with ongoing research in FMAN and to develop their own research agenda. The doctoral program draws upon not only the core faculty of FMAN but also the faculty of and courses offered in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences.

Normally the doctoral program takes four to five years to complete. The maximum time allowed is six years. All stages of the program require full-time involvement and commitment on part of the participants.

Contents

The PhD Program currently offers specialization in the following three major areas:
Management and Organization

The field of Management and Organization is typically considered as comprising a division between a more macro orientation geared towards studying organizations and their higher level aggregates as well as the more micro-level concerns focusing on behavior within organizations and human resources management. The Management and Organization specialization within the PhD program at Sabanci University can accommodate students who wish to pursue any one of these lines of research as well as those who may wish to seek ways to integrate the two.

The curriculum of the Management and Organization program firstly provides a strong background in conducting scholarly research. Building on this, students then take courses that specifically focus on organization theory, strategic management, organizational behavior and human resources management. Students are then provided with the opportunity, through elective courses, to pursue their specific interests and develop a research agenda to be examined during dissertation work.

Operations and Supply Chain Management

Operations Management, one of the basic functions in organizations, consists of all activities that are directly related to producing goods or providing services. Operations Management is a field that has emerged from the need of explicitly addressing the decision-making issues that managers confront regarding the operations function of their organizations. With its continuously evolving nature, it has expanded from its foundations in production engineering to include a wide array of subjects such as operations and manufacturing strategy, service operations, product and process design, innovation, quality management, process reengineering, as well as supply chain design and management. This spectrum addresses the whole value chain in which an organization operates taking into account all the involved parties from suppliers to customers and their interactions.

The Operations Management specialization within the PhD program at Sabanci University accommodates students who wish to carry out their studies in one of these areas using the most appropriate research methodology. The diversity of the subject area calls for a base of different research methodologies founded in various disciplines. The curriculum has been designed so that the students are exposed not only to traditional research foundations rooted in operations research and statistics but also to research methodologies from other management disciplines such as organization studies. Given this perspective, students are then provided with the opportunity to focus on their specific interests and develop a research agenda to be examined during their dissertation work.

Finance

The PhD specialization in Finance emphasizes rigorous analytical training and prepares students to pursue careers either in the academia or in the financial industry. Research in the field of finance generally starts with economic models. The chief goal is then to explore important questions faced by the industry using these models.
Typically, these problems are concerned with the management and the allocation of capital, risk, and rewards in the economy.

The curriculum stresses financial theory as well as tools widely used in academic research as well as in the financial industry. In particular, empirical work widely uses the tools of financial econometrics. Mathematical tools are also important as they provide efficient tools to understand complex models that reflect, as closely as possible, the important features of the market.

Those interested in the doctoral program are expected to have an excellent academic performance record in their previous graduate as well as undergraduate studies, and exceptionally high GMAT/GRE and TOEFL scores.
