The Pharmacology Graduate Program offers a path of study leading to the PhD degree. The primary focus for each student is the development of an independent research project under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Our professors hold appointments at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS), Rutgers University and the Cancer Institute of New Jersey.

The program of independent research is supplemented by core courses that cover the breadth of modern biological sciences. Course selection can be tailored to each students research interests, including the option of a specialized concentration in cancer biology in conjunction with the Cancer Institute of New Jersey.

Entrance to the Pharmacology Graduate Program is handled by an umbrella program known as the Joint Programs in Molecular Biosciences, which is sponsored by the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at RWJMS and the Graduate School New Brunswick. The Molecular Biosciences Office manages admissions, housing, laboratory rotations and the first year core curriculum.

Students are supported financially with stipends from the Molecular Biosciences Program in the early years and then by research grants from the faculty mentor in subsequent years.

Contents

* Entry level Pharmacology students take the first year curriculum of the Joint Programs in Molecular Biosciences.
* Students do three laboratory rotations in their first year. Typically by the end of the third rotation, each student will have identified the lab in which he/she will perform thesis research.
* At the end of the first year curriculum (sometime in June), entry level students take a written qualifying exam.
* The Graduate Program in Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology specifies the curriculum for subsequent years.
* The propositional/oral exam is taken within one year of completing the written qualifying exam. It is intended to be a discussion of the student's proposed thesis research.
* Beginning in the year following the oral qualifying exam, each student meets with a Research Advisory Committee annually to review the student's progress towards completion of research and defense of his/her thesis.
* Students completing the Program in Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology earn a joint PhD degree from Rutgers Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and Rutgers University.

Requirements

* Personal statement, official transcripts, and three letters of recommendation.
* GRE General. Subject in Biochemistry, Biology, or Chemistry recommended.
* In your personal statement discuss your relevant research experience.
* For Ph.D. programs only: submit one application for review by the Molecular Biosciences Interdisciplinary Admissions Committee for programs in Biochemistry, Cell and Developmental Biology, Pharmacology, Cellular and Molecular, Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, and Physiology and Integrated Biology.

Funding

All first year PhD students are supported by departmental or university fellowships or graduate assistantships, which provide stipend, tuition remission, and sometimes student fees for the first year. After the first year, students will be supported by their advisors through fellowships and graduate assistantships.

There are also a number of multi-year fellowships available for advanced students through NSF and NIH training programs. BME also has a limited number of teaching assistantships for graduate students who demonstrate outstanding teaching skills.
