English Studies for Teaching

English Studies is the study of both English Language and English Literature. It is a rich and thoughtful field in which to do a degree. You study both high-level issues of Language grammar, syntax, rhetoric and writing styles and also theoretical and philosophical aspects of language how language functions in relation to community and politics, issues of language and power, forms of English, and so forth. At the same time as this, you take a range of modules in English Literature, developing your understanding of the subject. Your study of English language is both functional, and cultural. English Studies is usually read in relation to a further strand: communications and media; practical journalism skills; or pedagogical skills in relation to the teaching of English. As with the rest of Humanities, English Studies maintains small-group teaching, disappearing at other universities, allowing a real immersion in the subject, and thoughtfulness and care in the teaching. There are dedicated computer / media suites for students, and the seminar and lecture rooms in the Chandos Road Building are comfortable and well furnished. The special reading room in the central library, the Comino Room, has large holdings in relation to the degrees. There is also an English Language resource room.

This undergraduate programme is designed for speakers of English as a native language who want to work as teachers of English as a foreign language.

It is particularly attractive to students who want to learn about the latest methodology for teaching English.

The programme consists of a combination of modules in English language / communication studies together with literature modules and specialist modules in TEFL Skills & Methods and Teaching Young Learners and Teaching Literacy.

How many bursaries and scholarships are available?

A number of scholarships and bursaries are awarded annually by the University which vary from partial fee to full-fee awards. These are thanks to the donations received from supporters of the University, including the Audrey Osborn Trust, The Headley Trust, Garfield Weston Foundation, Brunner Family Trust, RM & D Gregory, Eranda Foundation and John Desborough Memorial Bequest.

Applications are now closed for July and September 2012 applicants. We will be considering January and April 2013 applicants from Monday 17 September, the deadline for submission will be Friday 2 November.

Entry requirements & procedure

In the case of UCAS applications, if you are made an award you will need to select Buckingham as your firm acceptance choice.
