Description

Optional modules allow you to develop an interest in creative writing alongside like-minded students and within a creative and supportive environment. Options include ‘The Art of Modern Poetry’, ‘The Playwright’s Craft’, and ‘Writing Genre Fiction’.

All modules combine academic rigour with practical skills that include narrative construction, writing imagery and engaging the reader.

This is one of the suite of English courses that has an excellent record of student satisfaction. 95% of our English students are satisfied with their course, according to The Guardian University Guide 2012.

Teaching is enriched by Sunderland’s research, some of which has been classed as ‘world-leading’ by the latest Research Excellence Framework. The English team is recognised as one of the top research teams in the University.

Throughout the course we encourage you to develop your craft, widen your understanding of literature and to hone your skills in expression. In the second year you will have the opportunity to contribute to a group publication, edit the in-house journal, and, in the final year, you will develop a showcase of your writing which will allow you to provide evidence of achievement to agents, publishers and employers.

Added to this you will be invited to participate in extra-curricular activities designed to develop your profile and portfolio in association with our dedicated Creative Writing staff. These include publishing and editing volumes associated with our widely acclaimed 'Spectral Visions'.

English is taught within our Faculty of Education and Society and, according to the Student Experience Survey 2010, 91% of the Faculty’s students would recommend the University to others.
