Course Content

The first year gives the students the opportunity to encounter a wide variety of working processes associated with the disciplines of Graphic Design and Typography, Textiles (knit, print and stitch), Ceramics (hand building, throwing, slip casting), and Three Dimensional Design (wood construction and plastic forming). These are supported by modules in Printmaking, Photography and Digital Media.

This explorative introduction enabling the development of new ideas through conceptual thinking, materials handling and visual research, is supported by academic modules in design history and contextual studies.

In the second years students go on to develop an individual specialism within one of the four broadly defined areas of Graphics, Textiles, Ceramics or Three Dimensional Design. Throughout the course students are encouraged to develop a professional awareness by entering national competitions and by participating in external exhibition opportunities for their work. Regular study trips are organised to London, whilst an annual European trip to a destination city such as Berlin, Paris, Lisbon or Valencia takes place in the spring semester.

First year modules include: Visual Studies and Technology, Historical and Contextual Studies, Design Concepts and Materials Exploration Part 1, and Design Concepts and Materials Exploration - Part 2.

Second year modules include: Advanced Design Technology, Design Professional Practice, Design Process, and Design Development.
