If you are interested in the management of property and buildings such as shopping centres and multi-occupied office parks, or the valuation of a full range of buildings, you can study on a degree programme that is fully accreditated by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), aimed at giving you a career as a Chartered General Practice Surveyor. The main elements of study within this programme are property economics, legal studies and valuation, together with property management, property development and land use planning. In addition you will develop an understanding of the property industry in relation to other built environment-related professions and the wider business environment. The programme is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. Graduates from the programme will be admitted directly to the Assessment of Professional Competence to gain professional qualifications. The programme has been developed to ensure that teaching modules reflect and develop current best practice and cater for the needs of employers. As a result, graduates are fully equipped to gain rewarding and well paid employment on completion of the programme. The programme is the only one of its type recruiting in the West of Scotland. Students enjoy a challenging blend of academic subjects and practical knowledge and skills aimed at achieving professional competency and transferability. You will study essential elements of Construction, Economics, Legal Studies and Valuation, giving you the ability to relate the property industry to other built environment fields and the wider business context. A variety of learning methods will be employed, such as project and group work, field study visits, and a range of professional guest speakers also support the programme.

Course Content
Year 1: Studies include Urban Studies, Economics, Legislation, Construction and Property Valuation. Year 2: Continuation of Core Skills Development with additional study including Property Management, Urban Planning, Construction and Property Contracts and Property Development. Year 3: A year long professional placement which may count towards professional qualification. Year 4: Honours dissertation.Further studies include Advanced Valuation, Corporate PropertyManagement and Urban Regeneration.Work Placement
Students have the opportunity to undertake accredited work placement for twelve months in Level 3, returning to university study for Level 4.International Study/Exchanges
Study tours and case study work are integral to the programme. Most recently, study tours of North America have focussed on distinctions in their real estate markets and challenges for regeneration. Students are able to partake in academic exchanges through the established link with Ryerson University, Toronto.Assessment Methods
Our approach to teaching involves mixing traditional methods whilst employing modern technology, which in practice means our students can access materials through blackboards, weblinks, wikis and voice recordings. For some parts of the course, lectures are recorded and uploaded onto GCULearn, allowing our students to access the material when it suits them through a variety of media, such as a smart phone.Our students are partly assessed through undergoing real life practical experience often involving live projects allowing them to put into practice the theory they have learned. In part these assessments are organised to mirror how the professional body which accredits our course, the Royal Institution of Practical Surveyors would assess for professional competence.
Teaching Methods
This course has very good links with industry which allows us to share in their professional knowhow. Our students are introduced to valuation practice software by Ryden, a leading firm of chartered surveyors and we are allowed access to the Scottish Property Network database by Focus Group, a commercial property information provider.One of our key targets is to give our students national and international experience, which could see them spending a week out of every year of their course studying various commercial property markets; in their first year, our students will go to London, their second year visit will take them to a European centre, with France Finland and Spain being recent destinations and finally the third years sees them in Toronto, Canada.
Furthermore our students can also spend a year studying at a European university under the Erasmus exchange programme and uniquely could also spend a semester or further year studying at Ryerson University in Toronto.
