African, Middle Eastern, and South Asian Languages and Literatures

Established in 2008 in response to student and community interest, the Department of African, Middle Eastern, and South Asian Languages and Literatures (AMESALL) at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey continues a long tradition of scholarly excellence and innovative teaching in the languages and literatures of Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. We provide instruction in languages such as Akan (Twi), Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi, Persian, Sanskrit, Swahili, and Turkish using the latest methodologies and technologies of heritage and second language learning. In addition, we offer introductory and specialized courses taught in English on a broad spectrum of topics, including literature, folklore and translation.

Course Content

The Major requires two years of language study (or the equivalent proficiency) as a prerequisite, and the successful completion of at least 33 credit hours. It has two options, a Regional option and a Comparative option.

• Classical Literatures of Africa, the Middle East and South Asia and
• Senior Seminar in Literature and Society

• Literatures of Africa or
• Literatures of the Middle East or
• Literatures of South Asia

• The Regional Option: This option is designed to allow students to explore in depth one of the literatures offered by AMESALL, within a regional context.
• The Comparative Option: This option is designed to allow students to engage in comparative work among the three regions represented by AMESALL.
