Description

The foundation levels of the programme include the study of physiology, microbiology, biochemistry and genetics while in Years 3 and 4 aspects of cellular regulation, immunology and molecular medicine are studied. In every subject you will engage in high levels of practical scientific work, constantly enhancing your lab skills, which are essential for a smooth transition to the workplace. The "hands-on" learning you will engage in allows greater interaction with lecturing staff and understanding of the subject matter, helping you to progress through the programme with knowledge of the subject which is both theoretical and practical. This degree has been developed from the long established and respected Applied Biosciences degree, which has been taught at the university for many years. The Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences has an excellent teaching & research record and combines a friendly learning environment with state-of-the-art facilities. Why Choose This Programme?

Modern medicine is increasingly dependent on understanding how cells and molecules interact.
This programme focuses on how human cells function in disease and health and draws on a variety of disciplines including genetics, molecular biology, cell biology and pharmacology.

Knowledge of the interactions between molecules, cells and organs, studied in Cell and Molecular Biology, enables the biologist to identify factors in individuals that confer susceptibility to disease, providing opportunity for the development of more accurate methods of diagnosis and the design of improved therapies or cures.

Career Opportunities

A degree in Cell and Molecular Biology opens the way to an extensive array of career destinations. There are careers in research and in development and these may be in research institutes or in industry, such as the pharmaceutical industry, health and medicine. Biotechnology enterprises also recruit graduates with this qualification. The completion of the human genome sequence has provided a further spur to activity in the bio-health area. According to Scottish Enterprise, expansion of employment opportunities in this sector is currently outstripping availability of graduates, meaning you will enjoy excellent career prospects upon graduating.

Employment Details

On graduation our students will have the graduate attributes which will enhance their employability, such as critical thinking and analytical capacities, self-confidence, creativity, project management and presentation skills. These skills go beyond the professional knowledge and skills, providing our graduates with a wide range of expertise, leading to a broad range of career options.

Our graduates can work as a bio-scientist in a range of areas; from industry, as part of a research teamor in pharmaceutical development, biological product research or conducting research in government, health service and university laboratories. Laboratory based employment is also available in public health laboratories, hospital laboratories and in environmental management. In the food and drink industries, careers are available in food manufacturing and production, food product research and process development as well as in food and water safety.

Course Content

Year 1: Foundation modules for Human Biology.
Year 2: Intermediate modules including Physiology, Microbiology and Biochemistry.
Year 3: Modules include specialised modules in Cell and Molecular Biology.
Year 4: Students undertake a workshop in Molecular Biology and a research project in Cell and Molecular Biology (accounting for two modules) and four taught modules in advanced topics.
Note: This programme shares a common first two years with a suite of related programmes, giving you a solid grounding in a range of subjects and the opportunity to change direction in your studies, should you wish.

Assessment Methods

Our programme is designed to produce graduates who have a balanced knowledge and understanding of all branches of this subject, allowing them to become enquiring, independent learners while exhibiting high levels of professionalism.

Half of our assessment is practically based providing hands-on laboratory skills and experience of data handling and presentation. Our approach makes our teaching programme not only distinctive but also attractive to employers and will also equip graduates with the necessary skills and competencies to allow them to compete in the global marketplace.

Teaching Methods

We adopt a wide range of learning and teaching methods to ensure not only that our students will gain the necessary knowledge and understanding of cell & molecular biology but also develop their intellectual and personal skills.

Our programmes take a flexible approach, combining larger scale interactive lectures with small group sessions examining case studies and honing data analysis and presentation skills. Laboratory based practical classes are central to our teaching, allowing our students to gain exposure to the rigour and demands of scientific investigation.

Our students’ practical work in their initial two levels is based on developing core laboratory skills, leading to more advanced practical laboratory skills training by Level Three. Level Four students undertake a specialist molecular biology workshop in addition to an individual lab based project. All of this work takes place in our recently refurbished suite of teaching and research laboratories.

Our Level 2 students also have the opportunity to study abroad for a semester in our international exchange programme at the University of Massachusetts in Boston.
