Description

The public health major prepares students for graduate education in public health and for entrylevel positions in a broad spectrum of private and public health organizations. Students receive a conceptual understanding of interrelated health, environmental, economic, educational, and social welfare issues.Learning Goals:
  • Critical Thinking: Students will develop their critical thinking skills by reading, discussing and evaluating information about issues related to public health.
  • Communication: Students will present their internship experience as an oral presentation in an open venue.
  • Mathematical Reasoning and Analysis
  • Students will develop and apply concepts from research methods and basic statistics to critically analyze information as it applies to public health.
  • Scientific Inquiry: Students will develop a research question and write a coherent, well-organized research paper about a topic related to public health.
  • Information and Computer Literacy: Students will develop research and computing skills that allow them to create and use existing databases to analyze information related to public health.
  • Professional Development & Ethics: Students will integrate and apply concepts from earlier coursework in a contracted internship experience with a planning or public policy agency. Students will complete at least one human subjects certification program

Course Content

Prerequisites for the Major in Public Health (6-7 credits)
  • Introduction to Planning, Policy, and Health
  • Basic Statistical Methods for Policy, Planning, and Health or a 200-level or higher basic statistics course

  • General Biology or equivalent (Anatomy and Physiology I, II only optional for School of Arts and Sciences matriculants)
  • General Chemistry OR Impact of Chemistry AND Chemistry of Life

  • Internship with Seminar

Requirements

To pursue the major, students must apply and be admitted to the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy by completing the Application for Declaration of Undergraduate Major form. Admission to the major requires a minimum grade of C or better in each of the prerequisite courses. Completion of the public health major leads to a bachelor of science (B.S.) degree.
Students transferring from within the university, transferring from outside the university (from another college or university) or students who previously began a program at Rutgers University and have not completed that program (re-enrolling) who wish to major in public health should follow the course of study for the Public Health Direct Admit (832D) program.
