Description

Completing pre-health prerequisites prepares students to apply to health professional schools. It does not result in the completion of a degree, with the exception of clinical lab science.

Your studies at Kansas State University will begin with core courses in math, science, social sciences, communications and humanities. You will need to maintain a 3.0 GPA to remain in the pre-health curriculum. Some programs require you to complete a bachelor’s degree, while others require only the completion of certain prerequisites.

For the following programs, you must complete a bachelor’s degree before you enter a health professional school. You are not required to choose a specific major as long as you complete all of the prerequisite classes for your particular pre-health area.

  • Pre-dentistry
  • Premedicine
  • Pre-optometry
  • Pre-physical therapy
  • Pre-physician assistant

For the following programs, you are not required to complete a degree at K-State to apply to professional school. You can stay and finish a degree, but you are eligible to apply for professional school as you complete prerequisites, which usually takes two or three years.

  • Clinical laboratory science (medical technology)
  • Pre-health information management
  • Pre-nursing
  • Pre-occupational therapy
  • Pre-pharmacy
  • Pre-respiratory care

Requirements

As careers in health professions continue to be plentiful, applicants to the health professional schools become more numerous and requirements for admission become more competitive. One of the universal requirements is a high grade point average (GPA). Therefore, after completing 24 or more semester hours at K-State, students with a K-State GPA below 3.0 will have their pre-health designation removed from their academic plan.
To remain in a pre-health designation a student must continue to take the prerequisite coursework appropriate to that curriculum and maintain a 3.0 K-State GPA. To be competitive, at the point of application to professional schools students must have earned a GPA above a 3.0.
Academic prerequisites for successful application to health professions schools and programs are different for each profession and vary from program to program within individual professions. Some require completion of a bachelor’s degree before matriculation while others require only the completion of specific coursework. No specific degree is required.
