Description

A vital part of the surgical team, ODPs work alongside medical and nursing staff to provide care for patients undergoing surgery. They practice in three main areas: anaesthetics, surgery and recovery.

The programme provides the opportunities you need for a successful career as a Registered ODP. In fact, GCU is the only university in Scotland to deliver this programme.

On this programme, you'll take part in a wide variety of teaching and learning methods which will develop both your knowledge and practical clinical skills. These include lectures, tutorials, seminars, self-directed study and practical workshops. You'll then build on this study by spending time in our Clinical Simulation Laboratory and Simulated Theatre Area. This will allow you to increase your confidence and learn practical skills in a safe, supervised environment.

Clinical placements are an essential part of the programme and you will spend 60% of your time workin in operating theatres. During these placements, you will work as part of the theatre team and be supported by a specially trained mentor. It's a great opportunity to apply academic theory to clinical practice.

After graduation, there are many exciting careers available to Registered ODPs in today's Health Service. ODPs are highly sough-after - which, of course, means that theatre departments throughout the UK are keen to employ graduates of this programme.

Course Content

During each term, students spend five weeks in the University followed by eight weeks in clinical practice.

Year 1: The first year of the programme introduces students to the three key areas of perioperative care, anaesthetics, surgery and immediative postoperative care. It also focuses on: clinical skills, communication, life sciences, infection control and professional practice.

Year 2: The second year of the programme strengthens the student's skills in perioperative care and focuses on the care of patients who are highly dependent or who have complex care needs. This includes: paediatric, emergency and obstetric surgery and anaesthesia.

Work placement: Clinical placements are an essential and rewarding component of the ODP programme. During placements students work as part of the perioperative care team and are supported by a specially trained mentor. This allows students to apply academic theory to clinical practice.

Assessment: A variety of assessment methods are used, including examinations, written assignments and assessment in the clinical area and in the University's clinical skills laborator.

Higher: CC, A Level: DD, ILC: CC at C1. Candidates must satisfactorily pass an interview, a health screen and a criminal record check.

Essential subjects: English and Mathematics (S Grade 3/GCSE C/ILC-O).

Recommended subjects: Mathematics and a science subject (GCSE C/S Grade 3/Int 2).
