At GCU, we aim to develop creative, innovative and skilled podiatric practitioners. During the programme you'll develop a communicative and caring attitude towards patients. Right from the start, you'll gain practical experience of the clinical environment, observing and working alongside skilled and experience practitioners.

Working in a clinical simulation laboratories, and using the latest gait analysis equipment, you'll learn how to devise and manufacture orthotics to help patients. Your studies will lead to being able to diagnose and manage problems affecting the feet and lower limbs.

Before applying, try to spend time with a registered podiatrists to build your knowledge of the scope and variety of work involved.

As a qualified podiatrist, you will be an independent practitioner who diagnoses and treats disorders of the foot and lower limb. As well as working within the NHS, you could make a career in the private sector - in everything from high street retailers to sports medicine centres. You could even run your own business. Alternatively, some podiatrists study to become podiatric surgeons.

Course Content

Year 1: An introduction podiatric theory, anatomy and physiology, the clinical environments and some of the practical skills which students will go on to further develop in subsequent years. Additional modules introduce concepts relating policy developments, sociological and psychological theory and provide a foundaiton for supervised clinical practice. There is also a 3 week block summer placement.

Year 2: Students will learn about medicine and surgery and how the management of these conditions can impact upon what you do as a podiatrist. Further core podiatric theory and research skills are developed and student have the opportunity to organise a one week placement.

Year 3: Students build upon previous studies and spend more time working with patients during placement. Additional subjects include Pharmacology and Health Promotion.

Year 4: Clinical work increases and students undertake an Honours project. They have the opportunity to select a professional area of interest to study and gain an understanding of organisational and business structure.

Work placement: Clinical education and practical experience take place in the purpose built teaching facility in the Podiatry Dept. based within the Southern General Hospital. Placements are also carried out in outpatient clinics including Rheumatology, Diabetology and Orthopaedics. Students take part in weekly placements in community podiatry clinics and paediatric clinics at Yorkhill Children's Hospital and have the opportunity to spend one week in an NHS Trust, accompanying a practising podiatrist. Additional overseas placement opportunties also exist.

Assessment: A variety of assessment methods are used including written and practical examinations, essays, portfolio, presentations and online assessments.

Higher: BBBC, A Level: CCC, ILC: BBBB.

Essential subject: English (Higher/GCSE/ILC-H) plus two science subjects at S Grade/GCSE or one at ILC-H.

Recommended subject: A science subject (Higher/A Level/ILC-H), preferably Biology.

Additional requirements: Before applying, try to spend time with a registered podiatrist to build your knowledge of the scope and variety of work involved. Your personal statement should outline shadowing experience, and demonstrate motivation to become a podiatrist.

English language: Students whose first language is not English are required to hold the equivalent of an IELTS test score of 7.0.

Mature students: Entry for mature students will be assessed on an individual basis.
