Description

An education in chemistry provides a basic foundation for a wide range of careers. By building on a firm grounding in a physical science, a student becomes especially well-qualified for direct employment or for graduate and professional study in many areas of both basic and applied sciences. The Department of Chemistry at Rutgers-Camden has a small yet very research-active faculty, and all undergraduates are encouraged to participate in some research.

The Department of Chemistry offers a broad and comprehensive program of study, which includes a traditional curriculum and three other options for a major in chemistry. The various options permit students to select an area of concentration that reflects their particular interests and career goals. The Department also offers an honors program for eligible students.
The four choices leading to the chemistry major are:

Traditional Program

American Chemical Society Certificate Program

Biochemistry Program

Chemistry-Business Option Program

The certificate program and the traditional chemistry program prepare the student for graduate study in chemistry or biochemistry, or for employment as a professional chemist or biochemist. The biochemistry program prepares the student for graduate study in biochemistry or one of the allied health fields, or for employment in related fields. The chemistry-business program is directed to entry-level preparation for the nonlaboratory aspects of the chemical profession and the academic prerequisites for pursuit of the M.B.A. degree.

Requirements

Our primary emphasis is placed on the student’s academic promise as demonstrated by:

• completion of required entrance subjects
• academic performance in high school or its equivalent:
• strength of academic program (number/type of academic, honors, or advanced placement courses completed)
• grades and grade trends
• weighted grade-point average(s)
• cumulative rank, when available
• SAT and/or ACT scores
• English Proficiency Examination results, when required

Funding

Rutgers uses your FAFSA to develop a financial-aid package based on your qualifications, financial need and the funds available to the university. Your package may include any or a combination of these major financial aid sources:

• Gift aid does not require repayment and is divided into three categories: grants (which recognize financial need) and scholarships and awards (which recognize academic merit, special talents, or other achievements).
• Loans must be repaid (usually after graduation) and can come from private lenders as well as federal, state and university sources.
• Work-study allows students to earn money for college expenses while gaining valuable skills - often in their intended field.

Accreditation

The Department of Chemistry is accredited by the American Chemical Society's Committee of Professional Training. Students who complete the prescribed programs of study are certified by the committee.
