Description

Join this exciting new degree and immerse yourself in the fascinating world of heritage, history and archaeology.

This degree combines academic study of heritage, history and archaeology with practical skills development that aims to prepare you for employment in the heritage sector and beyond.

There is a core of heritage-based modules throughout the degree and, initially, you divide your studies equally between heritage, history and archaeology.

In later stages you have the option of choosing which history and archaeology modules you take from a very broad range of topics.

There are also opportunities to focus on different areas of the world.

Heritage, History and Archaeology careers

Heritage, history and archaeology graduates will leave Newcastle University well equipped to enter a wide range of careers.

Within the specialist fields of heritage, history and archaeology, the job market for our students ranges from careers in very specific areas, such as: heritage site interpretation; museum, gallery and heritage education; exhibitions and curating; collections documentation and research; to the more general, such as: museum, gallery and heritage marketing or management; cultural events, and tourism.

Some of our students will continue as professional archaeologists, historians or heritage experts with organisations such as English Heritage, or within public and private museums, galleries, heritage sites and local authority planning or culture and leisure offices.

Postgraduate courses, including those on offer at Newcastle University cater for those wishing to specialise in various types of heritage, museum and gallery, historical, or archaeological work and these include opportunities for further professional training and practical experience.

In addition, many graduates in this field volunteer in museums or galleries, at heritage sites or on excavations in the UK or abroad to increase their practical experience before taking up permanent employment.

Other heritage, history and archaeology graduates may use their skills and expertise as company archivists, specialist librarians and researchers, information technologists, arts and cultural managers, teachers, and in a variety of industries including publishing, broadcasting, events and public relations. Law conversion courses are also a popular career route for graduates.

The wider graduate job market open to our graduates also includes careers in:

  • tourism and events
  • marketing
  • the media and publishing
  • management
  • teaching
  • finance
  • law
  • administration

Employers appreciate the combination of transferable skills, both academic and practical, which our degree enables you to develop.
