Studying sociology at Birmingham gives you an exciting opportunity to explore the unprecedented social changes reshaping the world today.

This programme provides students with the knowledge and skills to critically engage with key issues facing contemporary societies, such as: the changing nature of work, gender roles, sexuality and family life; questions of identity and culture in increasingly diverse multiethnic societies; the nature and implications of globalisation; the role of the media and new information technologies; and the impact of changing lifestyles and patterns of mobility and consumption.

We place a strong emphasis on your acquisition of research skills and throughout the programme you will receive training in research methods, which aims to equip you to carry out your own research. In your final year you will have the chance to research and write a dissertation on a topic of your own choice, with support and guidance from our teaching staff themselves active researchers.

Course Content

First yearIn your first year you will study Social Divisions, Social Worlds and the Sociological Imagination, and Media, Culture and Society as well as the skills and methods that sociologists use. In addition, you can select optional courses from within or outside the department (for example, languages, politics, economics, social policy, history or African studies).

Second yearThe second year builds on the foundations of the first year by developing your understanding of sociological theory, analysis, skills and methods. You will have the option to take courses in areas such as gender, sexuality, youth, ethnicity, media or contemporary culture, as well as courses from outside the department.

Third yearIn addition to carrying out your independent dissertation in the third year, you will study Contemporary Social Theory and select courses from a wide range of options covering the family, ethnicity, the sociology of fame and success, urban sociology, film, the body, popular music, cultural theory, the environment, political sociology, and the public domain.

Teaching and assessment

Teaching is typically delivered via weekly lectures, seminars or workshops. You will also have opportunities to do specialist training in our computer labs or project work. Generally, courses are assessed by a combination of written assessments and examinations, with some including assessment of individual or group presentations or visual work.
