On our BSc Biology degree, you will study living things in all their forms from microorganisms to whole populations. Our specialist degree investigates how biology impacts on the world around us, encouraging flexibility and choice so you can tailor your studies towards your scientific interests.

Course highlights

• There are two placement opportunities as part of this course: a year in industry between the second and third year; or an internship in your third year – which can be completed in the summer or on day release. We will support you with sourcing the best placement or internship for you and making your application

• We have invested £3 million in science facilities and our labs provide the next generation of scientific instrumentation for molecular analysis post the genomic era - in line with the new focus in scientific research on protein-hunting rather than gene-hunting (more in facilities tab)

• There is an emphasis on options and flexibility, permitting you to design your own approach to the study of biology. You will be able to select modules across a range of traditional and contemporary biological disciplines, including those from other pathways as well as some from environmental science and some biomedical sciences modules.

Course Content

What will you study?

The introductory modules provide a framework of core knowledge in the disciplines of: cell biology, chemistry, genetics, ecology, microbiology, immunology, and the anatomy and physiology of animals and plants. In Year 1 you will develop practical laboratory skills to support your studies and develop this knowledge further in the biological techniques module. As the course progresses you will be able to select optional modules aimed towards your interests.

We normally make offers on 280 UCAS tariff points including one A-Level A2 in Biology or Chemistry with a minimum of Grade C. GCSE English and Maths with a minimum of Grade C are required. BTEC National Diploma/International Baccalaureate/Advanced Progression Diplomas are also accepted. We accept Access to Science HE Diploma. Applications from mature candidates without formal qualifications are welcomed provided they can demonstrate appropriate levels of relevant ability and experience.

English language requirements

You must have competence in English language and we normally require Grade C GCSE or an equivalent qualification. The most common English Language requirements for international students are IELTS 6.0 (with minimum 5.5 in all four components) or TOEFL internet based 72 (with at least 17 in listening & writing, 20 in speaking and 18 in reading).

Middlesex also offers an (Pre-Sessional) that ranges from 5-17 weeks depending on your level of English. Successful completion of this course would meet English language entry requirements.

Entry into year two or three (transfer students)

If you have achieved a qualification such as a foundation degree or HND, or have gained credit at another university, you may be able to enter a Middlesex course in year two or three.
