The aim of this Masters programme is to help train students to operate in the field of performance.

Career prospects

According to the Major studied, graduates work in various fields of performance, orchestra, for example. Other potential areas include chamber music, ensemble work (also specialised), wind orchestra and ensemble conducting (for those with conducting Majors). It is becoming increasingly common to combine free lance activity with other employment commitments, which may even be of a pedagogical nature.

Objectives

This is a specialist course with three different Majors: Instrumental/Vocal Performance, Wind Orchestra Conducting, Ensemble Conducting (Contemporary Repertoire). The Major in Instrumental/Vocal Performance covers the fundamental aspects of performance (instrumental/vocal, chamber music, orchestra repertoire). The Major in Wind Orchestra Conducting usually requires previous study of a wind instrument and corresponds to a band conducting qualification. The Major in Ensemble Conducting (Contemporary Repertoire) is designed for contemporary music performers and composers, and teaches ensemble conducting skills.

Skills

The specific aim is to provide a musical education focussed clearly on performance and at the same time based on the capacity for autonomous judgment and critical reflection, providing students with the means and tools which, on completion of the MA programme, will allow them to realise their full artistic potential.

Bachelor of Arts in Music or an equivalent musical education;passing an admission examination;a BA degree does not automatically guarantee admission to the MA programme since the admission examination is compulsory for all applicants. Applicants with equivalent BA qualifications from other universities will receive equal treatment.

Students may be entitled to receive Cantonal Scholarships, provided they meet certain income conditions and provided they are resident in Ticino. For foreign students, and under certain circumstances, SUPSI may liaise with private institutions offering scholarships.
